How did the event go AMHRC, was there a good turnout? Friedman is truly a gentleman and a scholar, he wouldn't have to try too hard to impress. Hope it all went well, and apologies for missing out on what I am sure was an informative session.

                        SoM,

Yes it was very well attended and Professor Friedman did not fail to deliver. A crucial point that emerged from his lecture was the assertion that Macedonian is developing in ways that are resisting pressures from major global forces for a more definitive standardisation. Macedonian dialects all over RoM, are coexisting quite comfortably at present with the standard literary language.

It was just a pleasure to watch and listen to an expert 'do their thing'.

                        Cheers,

                        AMHRC.

Wasn't it fascinatng how contact between the different peoples in the area influences each others' languages? It reminded me of the true meaning of the term 'living language,' and further informed my understanding on how Macedonian developed, and retained different grammatical structures to other Slavic languages.

Professor Friedman was informative, witty and gracious in the face of a rude 'verbal' attack.

Thanks to the AMHRC for bringing this gentleman down here. I would look forward to this happening again in the future. Perhaps we can organise a more detailed program.

After a brief question and answer re the nature and form of the Ancient Macedonian language and it's possible relation to our modern language, a person posed a somewhat indecipharable question about Macedonia, it's biblical existence??? or something along those lines, to which the professor simply explained that etymologically, there is no definite understanding/explanation of the word 'Macedonia.' To which the guy asking the question accused him in that case of not being a professor. It would've been laughable if it wasn't cring-worthy. It was only a minor blip on the event however, born out of ignorance and misunderstanding.

many thanks! it seems that some people like to refer to professors when it suits them and biblical references when they don't like what they hear!
