Greece announced to present a "detailed" reply on the United Nation's report, asserting that this country denies the existence of the Macedonian minority on its territory and violates the rights of the members of this community.
"Greece will make before the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, a detailed presentation of its positions regarding the Report of the UN Independent Expert on the minorities' rights," said Yorgos Koumoutsakos, the spokesman of the Greek Foreign Ministry.
By claiming it respected the rights of minorities, Greece rejected the UN Report published last week, which called the country to withdraw from "the dispute over whether there is a Macedonian or a Turkish minority on its territory" and focus on their protection.
"Our positions are crystal clear and based on absolute respect of the human rights, a principal stance that applies to the minorities and represents an achievement of the modern Greek republic," Koumoutsakos said.
The UN independent expert Gay McDougall released a report after paying a visit to Greece, entitled "Mission in Greece", which calls the Greek government to respect the rights to self-identification and freedom of expression of the minority communities.
The principal recommendation included in the report reads that "Greece should withdraw from the dispute over whether there is a Macedonian or a Turkish minority on its territory and focus on protecting the rights to self-identification, freedom of expression and freedom of association of those communities."
The report adds that the rights of these communities to minority protections must be honored in accordance with the Declaration on Minorities and the core international human rights treaties.
"Greece is required to comply fully with the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, specifically those decisions that associations should be allowed to use the words 'Macedonian' and 'Turkish' in their names and to express their ethnic identities freely," McDougal underlined in his report.
