Government to count Macedonian citizens via Electronic Census

Government to count Macedonian citizens via Electronic Census
    Friday, 31 July 2015

Independent MP Roza Topuzova-Karovska has again opened the issue on carrying out a national census at Friday's Q&A session of the Macedonian parliament, especially now that the negotiations of revising the electoral roll are ongoing.

According to the MP, it is unclear how the work groups comprised of political parties' members set up to implement the July 15 Agreement have started to arrange the changes to the Election Code and regulate the electoral roll without having a current census of the population.

In an answer to her question, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski pointed that the Government intends to conduct a census and that preparations are taking place at the moment to connect the citizens' records electronically. The equipment that will enable electronic connections is expected to arrive by the end of the year.

"With this, 70% of the questions would be answered electronically," Gruevski responded. The ground activities of the census, which will cover only 30% of it, will be carried out in a much simpler way, the prime minister explained.

"We are making all the efforts to prepare the census which will not prompt doubts with anyone. This won't be a burden for those who ask the questions and for those who will respond. We are planning a census but we want it to meet all the standards," Gruevski said in an answer to Topuzova-Karevska.

The independent MP despite the response, expressed doubts whether this method would provide all the necessary parameters that are needed for the implementation of a successful census, such as demographic structure, the number of persons who have left the country, etc…
"Ido not want an uprising of people that would leave me at the first failure, I want revolution with citizens able to bear all the temptations to a prolonged struggle, what, because of the fierce political conditions, will be our guide or cattle to the slaughterhouse"
