From what we know about this city and its great history is the neo-hellene claim valid? Ultimately this claim landed Macedonia in a house of pain with the new-comer refugee Baptized Turks after the war for this land was lost. So does anyone think that their claims to Constantinople, or Istanbul, are valid?
Is the 'greek' claim to Constantinople valid?

Not anymore...... the Greek population in that city has been reduced to less than 20 000 if im not mistaken. Hardly enough to claim it by todays standards.
Also, I dont believe thare is any 'claim', officialy, to konstantinople from the Greeks anymore.Last edited by Spartan; 02-18-2010, 08:34 PM.

spartan the greek population of constantinople may never have been the majority, it was the official langauge after the 8th century but it was not the native langauge of all the population.
greek being the lingua franca of the eastern medditerranean doesnt mean that it was always greeks speaking it, like latin or english today.

A Greek-speaking presence emerged in the area due to colonisation in the ancient period, after that, the area remained a large transit route between Europe and Asia, with all sorts of people living there. In the eastern end of the Roman Empire, Constantine the Great established it as the capital, then Heraclius of Carthage in Africa introduced the Greek language as official.
It all comes down to circumstances, ethnic Greeks have no valid claim in an exclusive manner to 'ownership' of the area, they already suffer enough difficulties explaining the validity of other areas closer to or within the modern Greek state. In the name of the blood and the sun, the dagger and the gun, Christ protect this soldier, a lion and a Macedonian.
