Who's Afraid of the Ancient Macedonian History.?

Who's Afraid of the Ancient Macedonian History...?

    by Alexander DONSKI

    Google Translation -

The fact is that during the Yugoslav socialist concord history of ancient Macedonia here was biased neglected and this is so well known that I would not need to be attached to who knows what kind of evidence. However, for illustration, we will mention some of them.

In the book "History of the Macedonian people" (Skopje, 1988), which at 375 pages tends to show the history of Macedonia and the Macedonians from the ancient times, the history of ancient Macedonia is committed only 10 (ten) pages! This means that the authors of this book, the history of ancient Macedonia devoted only about 2.5% of the content.

Even more drastic example is the book "Selected readings on the history of the Macedonian people" ("State Publishing of PR Macedonia", Skopje, 1951.). In this book (which pretends to offer a selection documents for Macedonian independence from the earliest times) is not presented any documents connected with the glorious history of ancient Macedonia.

In "History of the Macedonian people" (Skopje, 1969) in all three bulky volumes on the history of ancient Macedonia is committed only 15 pages (from 33 to 47 page first volume).

Even more drastic is the situation in the edition "documents the struggle of the Macedonian people for national independence and state" (Skopje, 1981). In both volumes of this edition is not published any documents about ancient Macedonians.

Same is the case with a host of other issues of individual or collective authors who pretend to cover the entire history of Macedonia and the Macedonian nation. And they barely have something written about gramadnata history and glory of ancient Macedonia, if it is a history of Tunguzija.

Also, in many historical books with us (with the exception of honest serious exceptions) the ancient Macedonians were not presented as if some distant nation that today's Macedonians have nothing to do.

For all this there were several reasons. One was the daily political character. The essence of the reason lies in the fact that during the Yugoslavia (SFRY) all peoples in this country should have "common" (Slavic) origin, which was a prerequisite for the prolonged existence of that state (which in fact and in name contained Slavonic).

The second reason for neglecting the history of the ancient Macedonians during ednoumieto was related to the indirect influence of the Greek propaganda, whose reflections are felt not only in the world, but in our environment. Practically at the time of ednoumieto, impact and reflections of the Greek longtime and systematic state propaganda found its ally in the Yugoslav daily political and national panslavizam strained, resulting in overwhelming misjudged relation to the study of the history of the ancient Macedonians, then SRM (NRM).

The Yugoslav communists and Greek propagandists (each for their own reasons), will freely say that today's Macedonians are afraid to "find" a link with ancient Macedonians were thus threatened their interests. Therefore, the historical science of SRM (NRM) was forced exclusively Slavonic (with emphasis that the Slavs are zatkarpatsko tribe and that we are their descendants) and the ancient Macedonian history masochistic been neglected, wrongly, even concealment.

So there was no question of honest and free scientific discussion and exchange of arguments for or against a theory about the origin of today's Macedonian nation, but the deliberate disabling of research on ancient Macedonian history and ethno-cultural ties between modern and ancient Macedonians which is sometimes manifested by brutal physical manifestations.

Thus, for example, the first years after liberation, our one teacher of history at its hour, instead of "Alexander" the students said "Alexander of Macedon". Shortly afterwards, was called the UDB-a questioning in connection with this its determination of the Macedonian king. Later, the official historians of the time ednoumieto accepted this determination of Alexander, but the fact is that at first it disturbed the then Macedonian ednoumni controls.

Indeed, in addition to this, not coincidentally in the book "Selected readings on the history of the Macedonian people" ("State Publishing of PR Macedonia", Skopje, 1951.) Is not published any documents about ancient Macedonia, although the book tends include documents from the earliest history of Macedonia and Macedonians. Later the number of pages devoted to ancient Macedonia history books intended for a wider audience, timidly began to increase, so in 1988 the book "History of the Macedonian people", reached the figure of only 10 (ten) pages devoted to ancient Macedonia!

Similar data told me and one of our famous university professor, who told me that in conversation he had with former high funckioner the National Security Service from time ednoumieto, he confirmed that at this time was deliberately obstructed and hinder the study of ancient languages by Macedonian students abroad in order students to come to closer contact with the original ancient works devoted to the famous Macedonian history.

Surely these examples there are many.

This did not want to bring into question the great contribution of Macedonian historiography since the ednoumieto. Rather, at this time in other areas of our historiography achieved extremely valuable, great and lasting success. But the facts show that the relationship of this historiography to the study of ancient Macedonia and really deserves criticism. The fact is that our only university then you can get some further information of ancient Macedonia, but some of the findings are then studied deserve serious review (for example, claim that without some Macedonians were Greeks, etc..). Moreover, data on ancient Macedonia were imposed before the general public (as reflected by the contents of the historical issues we outlined).

In 1991 Vardar part of Macedonia (previous SRM) are independent as an independent state. I created another freer (ideological decontaminated) working conditions in historiography, but the situation regarding the research direction of our relations with the ancient Macedonians still slowly changing. The reasons this time indirectly associated with contaminated ideological historiography of the last regime in terms of dotichnava topic. The influence of the state as described before, many Macedonian historians and researchers, consciously or not, accepted exclusively panslavistichkata theory about the origin of today's Macedonian nation and its entire body of work they have sort of this theory (which undoubtedly contains elements and racism by forcing a "pure Slavic origin", etc..). Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect that these historians and researchers through the night would give up all that ever written and it will turn (figuratively speaking) "themselves against each other." This applies both to older and some younger historians and researchers. Some even go so far as still stubbornly cling exclusively to panslavistichkata racist theory of the origin of today's Macedonian nation, sometimes affective attacking even themselves artifacts in favor of proving the links between modern and famous ancient Macedonians. I really do not know if this is masochism in some other people, ie whether there are members of some other people who are so disdained their own ancient history. Can we imagine this act Greeks to the legacy we have from ancient Hellenes? Or can we imagine that today's Italians with humiliation will write the history of the Roman Empire, claiming they have "no connection" with the famous Romans? Is it possible? Certainly not. Convenient for our subjects do not care about truth, they care more about their own writing so far. Their logic is that if you come to the fore different data, their previous opus can be "endangered." But there are positive examples, when historians and folklorists from older generations, boldly engage in correcting the current attitude towards the study of ancient Macedonians in the official historiography during ednoumieto openly advocating for the intensification of this unjustly neglected process.

In some younger contemporary historians appears a kind of "fear" freer to write about this topic. They like to be "afraid" to be "mocked" by the foreign scientific community, if you write ancient Macedonians have entered their blood and culture in today's Macedonian nation. Therefore, they generally retain only the study of the history of the ancient Macedonians, without having to dare to speak about the legacy of this famous people in today's Macedonian nation. For them to exist as a kind of "self-censorship" when it comes to this subject. In this connection we may say that there really is no easy overnight to break everything that the Greek propaganda has built the world in terms of the Macedonians in presenting its own historical truth. This presentation and really create a pro-Greek minded authorities in the world. But what you mentioned about the Macedonian historians since the ednoumieto fully applies to the foreign authorities. Can a foreign historian who wrote about life "Greek character" of the ancient Macedonians, suddenly abandon it and start writing that they were Greeks, and still less to accept that today's Macedonians have some connection with ancient Macedonians.

However, despite all these problems, the truth is on the Macedonian side, and she slowly but surely everything is coming out more. Interest in ancient Macedonia Macedonians today amid sharply rising. Primary and secondary schools has increased study of the history of ancient Macedonia, which is also in academia. Soon the truth about the relationship between modern and ancient Macedonians will reach out to stakeholders and the public. That remains a good deal of foreign authorities believe that the ancient Macedonians were "Greeks" should not discourage us #. First, the USA is a group of historians, led by University Professor Dr. Eugene Borza (which today is considered one of the world's authorities on ancient Macedonians), who clearly wrote that the ancient Macedonians were not Greeks any. In other countries have reported such historians who arguably has refuted golemogrchkite articulations regarding the ancient Macedonians, this truth has already been accepted in several recent world renowned encyclopedias, where ancient Macedonians presented as separate people. So, pro-Greek minded historians in the world go slowly, and in their place comes a new generation of historians who are not burdened with prejudice and not slaves of the writings of his predecessors. Finally, we should know that "truths" accepted in scientific circles very slowly changing. Let us recall that for a long time in science believed that Greek mythology is "authentic Greek", but were later discovered by arguments which confirm that a huge part of this mythology was taken from the cultures of other nations and today this is considered as a relevant truth. So it will be the arguments about the relations between modern and ancient Macedonians, because these arguments there are only a matter of time before you will be presented and accepted at home and abroad. At the end, I can not stress the positive role of the current government led by Prime Minister, for the first time since independence, institutionalize historical truth by which ancient Macedonians of Macedonian history and people, despite fierce resistance from progrchkite, few pro-Bulgarian tendency and pro-bivshorezhimski reactionary anti-Macedonian elements
The Macedonians originates it, the Bulgarians imitate it and the Greeks exploit it!
