"Occasionally there are settlements of transhumant sheep herders, Sarakatsani or Vlachs, descendants of the medieval Wallachians..."

Page 316 (R. Stuart - The Vlakhs of Mount Pindus.):
"The name Anw Blaxia, Ano Blachia, as has already been noticed, has long since fallen into disuse; and the Bomoei or Bovians, whose settlements in Aetolia and Acarnania, went by the name of Mikra Blaxia, Mikra Blachia, and under the name of Sarakatsani* have established themselves in Agrafa, where Pindus and Othrys unite to form a barrier between the inhospitable regions of Aetolia and the sea-like plains of Thessaly."

* From Saraketsi, one of their former villages in Acarnania.

A part of the Sarakatsani from Greece, who settled in Albania in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, were not Hellenized but retained their Aromanian language. Cluj-Napoca's dialectologist Petru Neiescu met a group of these Sarakatsani in 1959 during an expedition to Albania, near Stepur. Conversing with them in Aromanian, he found out that they, being asked about their ethnicity, answered that we are sarakatsani (suntem saracaciani).

They had become farmers in the meantime, but they were aware of the fact that past generations (their ancestors) who had lived in Greece (and arrived from there to Albania) were pastoralists.

Before 1850, in Greece of that time, the nomadic shepherds were all Arvanitovlachs and Ablianite Vlachs. The Sarakatsani did not exist - the writer is clear.

Also, Arvanitovlach huts and their customs after 1925 are presented by various writers as Sarakatsan!

Some Sarakatsan words:

How would you define and distinguish Arvanitovlachs and Ablianite Vlachs?

Ablianite Vlachs are natives of Evrytania, while the Arvanitovlachs (or Albanian Vlachs) are originally from Albania & Epirus.

What exactly is an Ablianite Vlach?

The semi-nomadic inhabitants of the village of Stavropiyi in Evrytania (known as ‘Ablianite Vlachs’, from the old name of the village, Abliani) were descended from them. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the Ablianites appear to have been exclusively Greek-speaking, with no memory of having known or used Vlach language previously.

(They may or may not have been related to the Arvanitovlachs. The screenshots above distinguish the two groups.)

Interesting, thanks. So many of these little tribal groups.
