Liberator of Makedonija is on a distinguished road
Default Who was Rumena "Vojvoda" Gorgieva Pavleva

Her name has popped up for me recently. Supposedly a vojvoda who ran with Dedo Iljo in the mid-19th century. Would love to get some more information on her if anyone her could provide it.

Macedonian-language wikipedia has an article on her. Here is a google translate (obviously not 100% accurate and has grammar errors):

Quote:
Rumena Gjorgjieva Pavlova (Pavlova), (Rumena Voivoda) (Gyueshevo, Kyustendil, about 1829 - Bucharest, Romania, around 1895) - female Aydut military duke.

Due to several attempts at grabbing and Islamizing, her father married her early to George Shopa. Rumena was amazed by the character and the feat of the Duke Iljo Markov-Malesevski, who with around 170 ajduti attacked the tower of Deve Bair in 1854. In the investigation and revenge that followed by the Osmanli, among others, Rumena was tortured, after which she applied for ajuduta, but Maleshevski refused to accept her. She left the family and with the help of Stoyan Krkljansky as a barricade, she formed her own Aydut company. There was fear and trembling for the Ottoman authorities and thugs of thugs in the area from the mountain Osogovo to Vranje from 1858 to 1861. According to one of the versions for her life, after the betrayal and the failed attempt to assassinate, she dismissed her company and fled the Danube and later married and settled in Bucharest, Romania, where she died. Opera is in many Macedonian folk songs like "Mountain Queen".

There are several versions for the year Rumena was born. According to some around 1826, and according to others in 1831. Based on the data of the year when she is married, Rumena is thought to have been born around 1829 in Gyueshevo, Kyustendil. She grew up in a beautiful, energetic and capable girl, who attracted the attention of the Ottoman adversaries. The Kriva Palanka kajmakam, attracted by her beauty, grabbed her and forced her to climb, but villagers from several villages rebelled and opposed the Ottoman zulum. About forty villagers were arrested as rebels, but, in the end, together with Rumen were released. Due to several attempts at robbery and Islamization, the father, and in 1843, at thirteen to fourteen years old, married her Georgi Shopa. Although Rumena had early married her neighbor, this did not stop the attempts by Ottoman Turks. By linking it with the robbers and the rebels, in the event of any murder on the roads, the authorities were always looking for Rumena. "They were taken to an investigation in Palanka, they were tormented to poison her." Pressure was done through her father, who was taken to Skopje, where he was held in an abscond for a year. Upon his return, he was exhausted and sick, he soon died.

The terror of the Ottoman authorities has increasingly increased Rumena's sympathies towards the insurgents and rebels, as well as the desire to join them and to fight against the violent people who were living on the Macedonian unprotected population. Ever since she got married, she had connections with some Seymen from the tower of Deve Bair and some idiots. Rumena was impressed by the efforts of the Duke Iljo Markov Maleshevski, who with about 170 ajdutti attacked the tower of Deve Bair in 1854. Immediately after the attack on the tower, a chase was sent to Malesevski, even from Nisko. In the investigation and retaliation that followed by the Ottomans, among others, Rumena and Rumena suffered a lot. She was silent as she was beaten to say what she knew, but this event was crucial for the decision she made and a milestone in her life. She applied for ajuda, but Maleshevski refused to accept her. In 1855, after the turmoil and the killing of a Turk, when they all saw it and saw it as an ajdutin, she decided to leave the family and the four-year-old Andon and really become an aydutin. Leaving the amnesty to keep her son single, she left the family and with the help of Stoyan the fitter from the village of K'kljlja (Stojan Krklanski) as a barricade, she formed her own Aydut company.

In the period between 1856 and 1860, or according to other data from 1858 to 1861, Rumena with its idiopathic group, became fearful and trembling for the Ottoman authorities and thugs of thugs in the area from the mountain Osogovo to Vranje. The idol group deftly led by Rumena and her twin brother Stoyan Barryakar, protecting the Macedonian population, liquidated several Turkish armies, separate thugs. Many ages and rich people, including Christian, were persecuted by Rumena, the pagots they were doing against the poor, and attacked by traitors and collaborators with the Ottoman authorities. Among the people she was known as a good duke and whore and she became known as the "Mountain Queen". A number of losses were raised against the company, but thanks to the help of numerous kittens and Macedonian villagers, Rumena managed to escape by switching from one end of the other. Although the company acted independently, when the sufferers increased and became more numerous, Rumena connected with a part of the company of Iljo Maleshevski, who at that time was in the area of Vranje, while he was with the rest in Serbia. The attempt to connect with the company of Maleshevski in the vicinity of Vranje remained unsuccessful, because the girls of Dedo Iljo could not accept a woman - ajdutin, to whom they looked with contempt and humiliation. Unaccounted for, the squad returned to its territory, and the contempt for the woman Aydutin, who had been hiding until then with successes, appeared on the surface. The failure caused disagreements and suspicions among Rumena's aides. They sought the cause of the failure of the company in the collapse of twinning and secession between Rumena and Stoyan.

The suspicion that Ivo Maleshevski's adudues had said that the "woman for ayudutin" was not used was used by Spase from the village of Gradec, one of Rumena's aides, who wanted to become a duke. Instead of singling out and forming his own company, under the pretense that "a woman does not fit in to lead them" and that she betrayed the country, he has spoken a few words, to liquidate Rumena and Stoyan. There are several versions for one of the few tragic events in the Ajduk's societies in Macedonia. According to one of the versions, when the company was in some cottages between the villages Gradec and Gaber, Krivopalanechko, Spase and Milko from the village of Gaber, they killed Rumena and Stojan with trees while sleeping in the cottage. It was, in fact, one of the rare betrayals in the Ajduk Squads and the murder not of the Ottomans, but of its co-workers. This murder is another in a series of numerous bloody Macedonian inter-ethnic destruction as a people. After the killing, the company under Spasse's leadership acted for several months and broke up, Milko and three other idiots, guilty of the murder of Rumena and Stoyan, were vandalized by their friend Stoilko from the village of Tarnovo. He killed them in the village of Zhidilovo, Krivopalanechko, after which he surrendered to the valleys. Only Spasse who was absent that day was saved. But there is another version, according to which after the betrayal and the failed assassination assassination attempt, Rumena dismissed her company and fled the Danube River with a barrage and later married and settled in Bucharest, Romania, where she died around 1895. Rumena Duke was the leader of one of the most well-known Ajduk's societies in Macedonian history. She is sung about in many Macedonian folk songs as the "mountain queen".
