Macedonia to Plant 6 Million Trees Tomorrow

    BalkanTravellers.com

18 November 2008 | A total of 6 million trees will be planted over 30 square kilometres in 100 different places throughout Macedonia tomorrow, as part of the “Day of the Tree – Plant Your Future” autumn initiative.

That’s three times more trees than on March 12 of this year, when between 150,000 and 200,000 Macedonians planted 2 million trees. It is expected that Macedonian citizens, schools, soldiers and NGOs will be involved in tomorrow’s forestation activities.

The tree-planting action was initiated by the Macedonian opera singer Boris Trayanov, who believes in its success and plans to spread it to other Balkan countries.

“With the slogan “Plant Your Future” we want to inspire all of the Balkans. On March 12, 2009, the countries of the entire Balkans will plant [trees],” he was quoted as saying by the BBC Macedonian news website.

The initiative has obvious environmentral benefits, such as providing a counter action against global warming and contributing to the rehabilitation of the forests damaged by fires in 2007. But, as BalkanTravellers.com wrote in October, the communal activity also seemed to have a positive effect on Macedonian society, by bringing out different fractions and giving them a common cause.

Although the fall initiative was planned for October 26, as BalkanTravellers.com wrote in the same article, it was postponed until November 19 due to the weather conditions.

I spoke with 4 people today that live in Macedonia, none of them did any planting and everyone is just glad for the day off. I wonder how many more did the same...

This is what a healthy society does when giving back to the land they live on, it's a respectful act, a mature act, one that will bring many Macedonian citizens together over time

As far as many having the day off and enjoying it even if you don't plant trees that's completely normal in any society, but the day plants the seed in peoples mind which will have long term future benefits, particularity with the young

Giving back is contagious and gets easier with practice which will benefit Macedonia for years to come in many unexpected ways

I still think it's a proper waste of time and it's just an excuse for a day off. In Yugoslavian time school kids did it, outing, team work and it worked great. Also everyone who had to cut wood for heating had to replace it by planting new trees, I think it worked very well without having to have a day off every year. Macedonians have way to many holidays and honestly they seem to be making up more and more. That's how I see it

We have about 11 days in Australia.
I am lobbying hard for "den na shipinki"

A lot and a lot of stupid ones too but no one complains here.

The day of the tree was a good reason for people to sleep in, well not for me though as we Australians don't celebrate "The Day of the Wood" and continued to work as normal.

Add one more public holiday in Macedonia. Today is Vodici and a new formed public holiday. Wow! Wooping 16 public holidays!
