    Adam of Macedonia

    Adam of Macedonia

After Six Month Laboratory Analyses in Germany - Adam of Govrlevo Old Seven Millennia

(Vreme, 06.02.2004) - A ceramic figurine of Adam unearthed at the Neolithic site of Govrlevo has been dated to 5,478 B.C., according to six-month analyses conducted at the Radio-isotopic Age Examination Lab in Kill, Germany. The high-cost research has been enabled with the financial support of Ljubljana University and the authority of Prof. Mitja Gustin, who has shown extreme interest in Adam of Govrlevo, a finding that was described as millennial at the time it was discovered ahead of 2000.
Although in our first assessments within the Balkan-Anatolian Neolith we dated the approximate age of the figurine to 3,500 B.C., now, after these exact indicators have been published, we are given the opportunity to correct our modest assessment two thousand years back, archaeologist Milos Bilbija of the City of Skopje Museum who found the figurine says.
In the past two years, Adam of Govrlevo has been promoted in a few international symposia where it invariably attracted great interest and attention of the scientific circles. The figurine is exciting for its exceptional artistic making dominated by a realistic approach untypical for the Neolith when archaic images were made. Adam is a male torso with the extruded navel, stressed spine and deeply holed stomach at the moment of deep breathing in. Therefore, the figurine is a Biblical pretext of the creation of human (“and God made human of clay and inbreathed him life”) at the point of creation of human thought, according to Bilbija’s brave interpretation.
“Given previous dating of the first writing of the Bible, around 1800 B.C., Adam as its pretext, as human articulated thought on the genesis of the world, originated 3000 years before the word was written in the Bible, he says.
Many international archaeological authorities agreed with the assessment that Macedonian Adam is special, describing it even as “the monument to mankind”, and French archaeologist Catherine Comange, an expert for the Neolith, said the figurine is exceptional when she visited Skopje last autumn.
“As soon as you see it, you have no doubt that it is a contemplation process”, Comange says. She is interested in presenting Adam of Govrlevo at the Museum of Man in Paris.
In the meantime, I expect implementation of an agreement concluded between the City of Skopje Museum and Ljubljana University for further exploration of the Govrlevo site, Bilbija says.

„…at the beginning there was the earth. Then it turned into a clay, and it shapedinto a figurine… The hands which created it, divined it, and gave it a name – Adam.”
"Adam of Macedonia" is a ceramic figure of a male torso in a sitting position, discoveredin 2000 by the archaeological excavation of the site Cerje-Govrlevo (near Skopje),Macedonia. Is executed with supreme realistic dexterity unprecedented for the Neolithic.Immediately after finding it earned the epithet of 'Millennium Discovery'.Adam has an unusual artistic posture. It is a fully preserved attempt which represents aman caught in a moment of physical or spiritual activity. This male body, placed in aseated position, has a specific anatomy, deeply indented abdomen, well-defined muscles, visible spine and even a (broken) penis. "Adam of Macedonia", although incompletely preserved, presents surprising anatomical details and artistic expertise that were madesome 7500 years ago. According to German institute which made the analyzes withradioactive Carbon14 – the statuette "Adam" from the site near Govrlevo was crafted in5478 B.C.E.. Such dating again, perfectly coincides with the findings of historians, linguists and geneticists, who set the time and position of the first agricultural settlementsin Europe – in Macedonia. The archeological site Cerje near Govrlevo shows that at thattime, dating as far as the 8th millenium B.C.E., the surroundings of a settlement weresituated in the area particularly suitable for life, because of the climatic conditions andnatural characteristics. Environment was such that created the right conditions for continued human activity and living in continuity, which has allowed these prehistoric people from Macedonia to produce and create in a specific artistic way and notions

      Adam from Macedonia

It was found in 2000 in the archaeological excavation in the locality Govrlevo, on the border between the cultural layers that belong to the neolith and the eneolith. The figurine represents one of the ten unique archaeological findings in the world. Immediately after it was discovered it received the epithet “millennial finding”.

Adam offers unusually artistic craft. It is incompletely preserved effort of an expression of a man caught in a moment of physical or spiritual activity. Posed in a sitting position, this male body has accentuated anatomy, deeply redrawn belly, clearly stressed belly-button, well defined muscles, visible spine, and even a broken phallus.

The work of art with explicitly realistic art form was presented for the first time before the wider audience on 30 September 2006. At the moment it is displayed in the Museum of the City of Skopje.

        Adam of Macedonia

        Exhibition

        Title: Adam of Macedonia
        Date: 11.12. 2012
        Time: 20:00
        Place: City museum of Skopje

On December 11, 2012, starting at 8:00 pm, the Skopje City Museum will host two events associated with the Neolithic site Govrlevo near Skopje. The permanent archaeological exhibit of the Skopje city museum will be augmented by the addition of “Adam of Govrlevo” – a Neolithic figurine, consisting of a male ceramic torso, discovered in the year 2000. In addition, the Museum will present the monograph “Cerje-Govrlevo, Milos Bilbija”, dedicated to the archaeologist who discovered and evaluated the site of Govrlevo, as well as to the history of archaeological research on the site and to some of the findings, a part of which remain unpublished.

In order to mark this event, we publish a text by Vasilka Dimitrovska, co-founder of Haemus, which has been printed several times in Macedonian magazines.
        Adam of Macedonia

At the beginning there was the Earth. And it turned into clay. Then it shaped into a figurine, the hands which created it – divined it, and gave it a name – Adam. A small ceramic figurine of a male torso, in a seated position, has been creating a real turmoil in the scientific community since a couple of years ago. This figurine was excavated at the turn of the millennium, from the archaeological site of Govrlevo (Skopje, Macedonia). This figurine is dated to be some 6000 years old, and represents one of the most unique archaeological finds in the world. It has received the epithet of a millennial find.

Reconstruction of Neolithic house at Govrlevo

According to Milos Bilbija, the archeologist who excavated this miraculous figurine: “the maker’s inventiveness is strongly suggestive to the extent that the modern observer can easily recognize a 6000-year-old message in it”. At times it reminds of the famous sculpture by Rodin – The Thinker; however, Adam of Macedonia offers an unusually artistic craft in shaping this male torso in a seated position, with an accentuated anatomy, deeply redrawn belly, as if the figurine was trying to point at some kind of a diaphragmatic breathing, and there is even a broken phallus.

When you take a look at this figurine, you simply cannot remain indifferent to its contextual message. The incompletely preserved expression of a human male, caught in the moment of either diaphragmatic breathing is one of the most important foundation practices for meditation. When the diaphragm muscle contracts, it pulls the bottom of the lungs downward, causing them to fill, while the ribs flare outward to the sides. The chest and abdominal muscles are not used in diaphragmatic breathing. Conscious diaphragmatic breathing is extremely relaxing to the autonomic nervous system and is essential preparation for deep meditation.

Is it possible that at the time when the Great Mother’s cult was in full bloom in Macedonia, a unique and admirable object of such importance for our understanding of spirituality can be produced by the hands of those who apparently have marked the most curious epoch of human existence, that of the matriarchate. This in itself is a very untypical discovery for the period, since it is strange to see that the Great Mother Goddess, who could hear all the prayers of the people and could provide soothing to their troubles, would allow a precise depiction of the male spirituality to appear in the figurine of Adam, thus juxtaposing the representative elements of the culture as a whole. Could it be that there was a balance of sexes in Macedonia, way before one of them claimed dominance over the other?

At only a hand-distance from civilization, on the other side of the Vodno peak, down the silent slopes from behind Skopje, where only the symbols speak their taciturn tales, Adam of Govrlevo is trying to communicate a message, as old as time itself. In the history of Arts almost all figurines from prehistory are symbolic in nature and convey a kind of philosophical viewpoint of the culture that produced them.

Adam of Macedonia was created in an epoch where the words, as we know them, would have no meaning. Everyone would agree that the explanation for Adam’s existence is at hand; however, his enigma still remains intangible to many. For the time being, we have several conflicted viewpoints of professionals in the field of archeology. If we assume that with the accentuation of the anatomy, the prehistoric inhabitants of Macedonia would leave a more significant message through Time, then we may need to reconsider the spiritual dimension of human existence.

Have you ever tried to make a human-like figurine, which would depict your complete viewpoint and your personal experience of the world as such? You would probably notice that you need a lot of love, care and attention, as well as skills to perform such a miracle. This finding is of priceless value, and has already been registered as a monumental masterpiece with an explicitly realistic art form, and can be seen at the Museum of the City of Skopje.

he Adam of Govrlevo, often referred to as the Adam of Macedonia, is a Neolithic sculpture found by archaeologist Milos Bilbija of the Skopje City Museum. More than 7.000 years old, it is the oldest artefact found in the Republic of Macedonia and among the oldest in the world. At the world archaeological symposium in Croatia in 2002, archaeologists declared the sculpture one of the world's ten most important archaeological finds. It dates from the 6th millennium BC. The sculpture represents a male body sitting and shows remarkable details in the spine, ribs and navel, and erect phallus.

amazing find indeed. Now you have to make sure the greeks don't get hold of it.
"Ido not want an uprising of people that would leave me at the first failure, I want revolution with citizens able to bear all the temptations to a prolonged struggle, what, because of the fierce political conditions, will be our guide or cattle to the slaughterhouse"
