      Garbage like this does not help the cause in any way, shape or form. All it does is make it harder for genuine research to be considered because of the bad name it gives to real Macedonian scholars.

        I havn't got a clue what these guys have done. These guys have come up with a hypothesis, and a particular theoretical approach. I am not a linguist, and I am not a philologist. It is up to the 'experts' now to look into it and to form their own interpretation of it. Alot of people have entirely discounted their approach, but no one has been able to provide a case as to why they think these guys are lunatics or crack pots or whatever. There is no point as I see it "assuming" they have no clue, just because the rest of us have no clue about it. I'd be interested to find out what 'others' in the field have to say about it, before I discount them altogether.

I have, however, spoken to a linguist (specialising in East European languages) and he told me that the method they used was similar to assigning numbers to the letters both in Macedonian and the text on the stone, then using a shoddy mathematical formulation to match the two up. According to him, you can prove any language is related to any other language (and people do apparantly) by using that method. I didn't quite understand what he was telling me, but having read their work he dismissed it as pure fantasy based on historical coincidence.

            They are using today's Bitola dialect as the basis for the 'decipherment', when the Rosetta Stone was written 2,000 years ago. Our language has changed in a number of ways since then. They should have been using Proto Balto-Slavic as the basis. Furthermore, the grammar of their translation looks undefined and all over the place, and I am not even sure if their translation is similar (let alone the same) to the English translation of the Greek text.

              At the end of the day I think your feeling about this one may well be right, Tom; but I'm not entirely discounting them yet.

                It seems that their theory rests on a number of assumptions, which makes it speculative, your right. The idea that our modern language is the same as the ancient is a big assumption, but again, its not one assumption I am prepared to entirely discount yet. Having said that I think you've identified other problems with it relating to 'grammar' and 'syntax' ...etc, which I wouldn't have a clue about.

                  Pelister, our modern language has evolved over the centuries and has changed as a result. It is not the same as it was 2,000 years ago. And I think there needs to be clarity when terms like 'same' are used. I am not suggesting that there is no connection between modern and ancient Macedonian, there are definetly points we can refer to for the purpose of highlighting similarities. But to suggest that the Bitola dialect of today is suitable for deciphering a document from 2,000 years ago (as opposed to using examples from a contemporary language like Proto Balto-Slavic and/or Paleo-Balkan) is not only a stretch, it is impossible, because it is too simplistic and anachronistic.

                    Question 1. Why did you use a Bitola based dialect in your deciphered document when most people believe the Macedonian language has clearly evolved over the last 2000 years? Would you think Old Macedonian should have a greater connection to the Rosetta text than the modern Macedonian language?

                    Question 2. How does the deciphered text differ from the other deciphered languages on the stone?

                    Question 3. Did you compare your mathematical method with any other approaches undertaken by linguistic specialists in the past? How does your method provide assurances that your conclusion is the most logical one?



                    I have not read any of this stuff .... it doesn't interest me terribly to be honest .... but an opportunity exists to put this to bed, so it should be pursued.

                        I have checked the english translation of the Greek text, and like Slovak said earlier, I can only find superficial 'similarities' limited to a few words.



                        Furthermore, the words, grammar and syntax all seem odd, and are not consistent with the contemporary languages that were spoken during that time. I mean, look at this:
