Lord Byron’s nickname & his daughters
On one of their first boating expeditions together on the lake, Byron regaled the company with a ‘strange, wild howl’ that ‘he declared, was an exact imitation of the savage Albanian mode’. This made such an impression that, even afterwards, the private nickname for Byron in the Shelley household would be ‘Albe’ (short for Albaneser). When Claire gave birth to Byron’s daughter the following winter, their first name for her would be ‘Alba’.
