I saw Bajaga in the crowd, it's nice to have so many popular supporters in the arena.
Bratot, That was Saso Macanovski Trendo, they do look similar though i must admit.

I went over the game again and i suggest to everyone to watch it and those who dont like basketball just look at the atmosphere the crowd was awesome and when we play like that i cant see anybody beating us. It makes me feel very proud to be Macedonian.

Luol Deng is worth $73 million and we made him look very ordinary, Bo McCalebb put alot of pressure on him thats for sure.

Nice to see the American Ambassador in a Macedonian shirt along with his wife, Antonio Milososki in a Vardar shirt tops the lot.

Turkey beat Greece at world champs tonight with an overwhelming victory, Yay

            2010 World Championships: Day 4, August 31

Turkey sits pretty atop Group C after handing rival Greece its first loss, 65-76. Turkey never trailed after the second minute and led by as many as 18 to improve to 3-0. It will clinch the top spot in the group with a win over Puerto Rico on Wednesday. Ersan Ilyasova starred with 26 points, making all 6 of his three-point attempts for the host nation. Omer Asik added 12 points and Semih Erden had 10 for Turkey. Olympiacos big man Ioannis Bourousis paced Greece with 15 points and 7 rebounds. The game was close early, with the hosts taking small leads and Greece answering back. Ilyasova helped Turkey jump to a 12-18 cushion with a triple and 2 free throws. Erden soon had Turkey up 8 before Sofoklis Schortsanitis scored from the line. A Dimitris Diamantidis triple at the buzzer was ruled to be late after the referees checked with the instant replay monitor, leaving Turkey ahead 15-22 after 10 minutes. Antonis Fotsis and Omer Onan traded triples early in the second period and Schortsanitis powered his way inside to keep Greece close. Though Greece could not stop Ilyasova, Bourousis answered twice from downtown to bring Greece within 31-32 midway through the quarter. Ender Arslan came alive from outside to push the Turks to a 33-41 lead only to see Kostas Kaimakoglou and Vassilis Spanoulis drain threes to make it 39-41 at halftime. Both teams cooled down as the second half got underway, Turkey was first to find its groove with Onan hitting from downtown and Kerem Tunceri driving to make it 41-50. A Hedu Turkoglu triple stretched the lead to 10 and brought the Turkish crowd to its feet. Diamantidis fought back and got the Greeks within 50-55, however Ilyasova struck twice from behind the arc as Turkey raced to a 51-65 lead with one quarter to go. Turkey put the game away early in the fourth as Ilyasova connected on a triple and Omer Asik threw down a slam for a 54-72 Turkey lead. Nick Calathes ignited a 9-0 Greek run to bring his team within 65-73, but Turkoglu hit back from downtown and Greece failed to score in the final four minutes as Turkey remained undefeated with an impressive win.

Congrats! (since Greece has a good team, I thought we would even claim a medal). So, maybe you'll go far. Or is it too early to say?
That probably means you will play against New Zealand and we'll play against Spain (which is rather weak this year)!

Thanks. Actually i was expecting Greece to win this cuz in the first 2 games, Greek team was strong as usual but Turkey is usually among the top five European basketball teams too. We took silver medal in EU champs few years ago and there are 3-4 Turkish players in NBA for about 10-12 years. Our one NBA star player is injured and he couldn't participate to this world champs tough.

Spain is rather weak this year, so i think you can beat them easily while Turkey would be extremely happy if we can get bronze medal.

Onur, Any slam dunks in this match??

Greece got thrashed by USA in a friendly, i hope to see USA loose a match. Australia play Serbia tonight, i was shocked to see Australia just beating Jordan by 1 point, then loosing to Argentina on the buzzer by 2 points to thrashing Germany just recently by around 20 points.

Turkey is a very good basketball side, they have a few good NBA players in their side.

On the Court, Similar Cultures Clash Yet Again

The shrill whistles, the deafening din of Thundersticks and singsong chants began a half-hour before Greece played Turkey at the world championships. Centuries of tension between these ancient rivals reverberated during each possession.

“Certainly, Greece and Turkey have never been any kind of allies — ever,” said Ilber Orbayli, one of Turkey’s pre-eminent historians and the director of Topkapi Palace. “So the rivalry, of course, is very high.”

Amid an atmosphere than makes Red Sox-Yankees or Auburn-Alabama feel like pillow fights or patty-cake, Turkey pulled away for an impressive 76-65 victory. Turkey improved to 3-0 in Group C. The game showed that any game featuring the Turks in the knockout round will be a daunting contest.

“Our fans are great today,” the Turkish guard Kerem Tunceri said. “Before the tournament here, we talked a lot about this. When we get down they help us a lot. We have to use it.”

Despite being NATO allies, there is a reason Greece and Turkey celebrate their national days of independence because of victories over the other. They have fought four wars since the late 1890s, but with foreign ministers from both counties in the stands, there is an appearance of an active effort of cooperation.

The Turkish coach, Bogdan Tanjevic, who is from Montenegro, called the game a “gentleman’s fight.”

Egemen Bagis, a Turkish Parliament member who is Turkey’s minister for European Union affairs and chief negotiator, said that relations with Greece had been gentlemanly, as well.

The Greeks entered the game with a backdrop of on-court violence. Greece played for the first time in this tournament with two of its stars, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Antonios Fotsis, who had been suspended for their roles in the bloody brawl with Serbia during an exhibition leading to the world championships.

But for Greece, the full roster did not matter. It could not stop Milwaukee Bucks forward Ersan Ilyasova. He finished with 26 points on 6-for-6 shooting from 3-point range. He sparked a third-quarter flurry that put the game out of range and turned the fourth quarter into a one big party of singing and flag waving.

Aside from some sporadic booing during the Greek national anthem, there was little derogatory action from the fans, just raw energy.

“When you play against Greece, it used to be more of a patriotic thing,” said Omer Bozer, a former junior national team member who served as a Turkish Basketball Federation board member. “Not anymore, though. The world is changing.”

There were times when on-court scuffles were the norm in this rivalry, at the national-team level and when professional teams from the countries would play each other.

“Lately, it has been a lot more civilized,” said Ali Ton, a native of Turkey and former junior national team player who is now an assistant at U.C.-Irvine. “It’s changing. I can remember after the games on the junior team, you would have to sprint to the locker room without shaking hands.”

The Greek forward Ioannis Bourousis said, “It’s no problem,” in describing the rivalry between the players. “This is political.”

What Bourousis alluded to is part of what makes the Greece-Turkey rivalry so interesting, as the countries have so many similarities. The Greeks and the Turks drink similar coffee, with a layer of sediment at the bottom, though do not dare go to Athens and order a Turkish coffee or vice versa. Both cultures tend to eat similar food; yogurts, lamb and desserts like baklava are staples in both places.

Pop culture offers another example in recent years of how the neighbors are co-existing better, as the popular soap opera, “The Foreign Groom,” featured the family drama of a Greek man’s marrying a Turkish woman.

“Greek people and Turkish people are very similar,” said Aytek Gurkan, a former Turkish national team point guard who appeared in 82 games for Turkey. “Our governments don’t like each other very much.”

While the players on the court are often friends and have a mutual respect, Gurkan said, it is the outside pressure of the fans and older generations that drives the rivalry.

“When we came to the court, in our time, they told us, ‘You have to win the game against Greece and then you’ll be a Turkish national team player,’ ” said Gurkan, who played for Turkey in the 1980s.

The same sentiment resonated Tuesday when the capacity crowd at Ankara Arena rocked as if those centuries of tension were still building. And while an ancient rivalry becomes more civilized, Turkey showed that it is going to be a formidable foe to beat on its home soil.

Btw, i was at my mom`s house to watch that game and my mom got confused with the three Greek player with Turkish names, berberoglou, kaimakcioglou... She asked me like "who are these new players, never heard them b4". I told her like "mom, they are Greeks", and she was like "Ehmm, ohh mmkay!!"

thessalo-niki, any idea why and how these people didn't change their surnames? or you got Turkish surname too?

We also beat Puerto Rico yesterday and with the win, Turkey improved to 4-0 and are assured of winning in group-C.

Onur, I watched the highlights it was only a two point win, very close.

Why isnt Mehmet Okur playing? I havnt seen him feature, it was Turkolou who hit a few clutch shots in the end to beat Porto Rico.

Here is something interesting i found.

Yes, we started badly but then we picked up the game laters

We miss Mehmet Okur A LOT He is injured and couldn't even participate the tournament. Puerto Rico had massive sized black players like the USA and they kinda dominated rebounds. We needed Mehmet Okur against them to be able to get the rebounds against their USA style, energetic and muscle power based man-to-man basketball.
