Julie, I'm not sure if you were to ask many of the UMD members about the UMD claim as to being an "NGO" they would know what those three letter stood for - .. ot tri te?

- Baba and Dedo in Macedonia Need Your Help This Winter

Each year, the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) organizes a donation from the diaspora community for Macedonia. This year, our goal is to help the elderly who reside in the senior citizen’s homes throughout Macedonia.

"In the past, we have coordinated donations to orphanages and to hospitals, and this year we want to address another segment that is not talked about much - the elderly in Macedonia,” said UMD Board Member and Charitable Efforts Coordinator Aleksandra Trpkovska. "Many of us in the diaspora miss our grandparents in Macedonia. Some of them may live with families, while some of them live at senior citizens' homes. We want to reach out to the ones that are not with their families this holiday season and let them know we haven't forgotten about them. They are somebody's Baba and Dedo."

Meto, these are the type of activities UMD does well (and should really limit itself to seeing its a disaster in the political sphere). I can finally say "Well Done!"

UMD
What process do you have in place to ensure the donations you are collecting actually make it to the people who need them the most?

Fully agree, UMD needs to go back to square one with a new mission statement.

Aleksandra Trpkovska is the best contact for this at [email protected]

UMD has volunteers on the ground who deliver the material. We also buy everything in Macedonia to help the local economy.

See past issues of UMD Voice to read what UMD has done in the past to help Macedonian children:

Hear hear!

The only concern is transparency and if 100% of the donations will reach Macedonians rather than the pockets of some for certain 'administrative' costs. I would ask this poser under the UMDiaspora.org username, but what's the point.....

SoM - no worries about the 100% of the donations going to Macedonia.

UMD's 2008 tax filing can be viewed here: http://dynamodata.fdncenter.org/990_...0812_990EZ.pdf

The 2009 tax filing should be public through the IRS in early 2011.

UMD will also be sending the 2009-2010 financial report to its members in the first quarter of 2011, and a full Annual Report will be published for the June 2011 conference and elections.

I think its quite obvious where UMD's money goes, the real question is where does it come from?

So far, we have raised $152 for Baba and Dedo in Macedonia since yesterday! We need to raise a total of $2,500 by January 7th. I think we can do it before then. Can you help? $5, $10, $15, every dollar helps! Your dollar will go a long way in keeping Baba and Dedo in the senior citizens homes in Macedonia warm this Holiday/Winter Season. Help us buy socks, pajamas, and sweaters.

If we raise $2,500 before January 7th, we can aim to buy all these warm items before and deliver them before our target date of January 14th.

Donate $5, $10, $15, or whatever you can afford today by clicking here: https://web.memberclicks.com/mc/quic...d&formId=69654 (click on the Baba and Dedo Fund).
