A 1889 US press report about Hungarian hero Lajos Kossuth clearly distinguishes Macedonians from Bulgarians and Serbs

"It is putting it very mildly to say that the suggestion has created intense excitement among the Slav peoples of the Balkan states, who are incensed at the idea of expulsion of the man who of all others is the most idolized by Servians, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Macedonians and Roumanians alike, and the mention of whose name in any part of Austria excites feelings of reverence. Although Kossuth became most conspicuous as the unselfish champion of the Magyar, he himself is of Slav extraction, and a staunch adherent to Slav traditions."
