The name of the northern neighbour must be for general use including a geographical qualifier, which will distinguish it as a part of the wider region of Macedonia, says Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas in an interview with German daily "Süddeutsche Zeitung".

- This needs to be done because a small part of Macedonia’s historical area wants to claim representation of the whole region entirely for itself. Greece cannot accept this because the greatest part of this region lies within our own territory, states Droutsas, ignoring the question why are there three parts of Macedonia.


He admits that many Europeans do not understand Greece's position, and believe Athens uses the name dispute to block the EU integration of Macedonia.


Droutsas claims the new Greek government is making attempts to find a solution to the issue by urging direct contacts with Macedonia . He notes that PM George Papandreou after taking up office invited his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Gruevski to a meeting and stresses that Greeks are biggest investors in Macedonia.




- Unfortunately, the government of Skopje has been painting a very negative picture of Greece over the past few years. We want to explain to the neighbouring country's people that Greece is not the enemy. Greece is a very friendly country that can become the true supporter of Skopje’s accession perspective in the EU. But before accession negotiations start, the name issue has to be resolved, says Alternate FM Droutsas.
