Pretty sure Meto said years ago he supported a name change, but now is publicly claiming otherwise.

The MPO (Macedonian Patriotic Organization), is a diaspora organization formed in the USA a long time ago, 20's 30's not exactly sure Vicsinad can probably answer that.
The problem with that group is that they are Macedonian in name only. Ever since they were founded they have been what we call Bugaromani, people who believe that being Macedonian is a regional identity, and that ethnically Macedonians are actually Bulgarians. They don't believe Macedonians are a unique and independent ethnic group, just Bulgarians who live in the region of Macedonia. To this day they play this charade that they are a Macedonian diaspora organization, and continue to fool quite a few unsuspecting Macedonians who don't real follow politics or history. The MPO consistently meets with Bulgarian diplomats and officials, they direct their followers to Bulgarian churches, they raise Bulgarian flags at their events. Because they are a very old group they are very well connected. Many of there patrons are 4 or even 5 generation Americans who are well educated and assimilated. They deceptively lure unsuspecting Macedonians in, and then slowly try to indoctrinate them to believe that they are Bulgarians, or as they would prefer "Macedono/Bulgarians". In that regard they have had a lot of success over many decades. They have managed to split entire Macedonian communities through their divisive brainwashing, and after nearly a 100 years they are still going strong event though most Macedonians don't know anything about them. Vancho Mihajlov was the most well known Bugaroman in Macedonian history who actively worked to undermine the Macedonian revolutionary movement and push Macedonia towards Bulgaria. He was directly responsible for the deaths of many Macedonian revolutionaries and can be described as nothing less than a traitor to the Macedonian people. The MPO collected money here in the USA so that they could pay for Mihajlov's retirement which was in Italy. Here is a blurb straight from Wikipedia about Mihajlov, and behold the MPO is actually mentioned in his biography. :6: " Mihailov's grave in Rome, Italy Gradually Ivan Mihailov was established as a legal political figure and author of the ideology of the Bulgarian national liberation movement in Macedonia. This fact allowed for a close political alliance between Ivan Mihailov and the Macedonian Patriotic Organization in the United States, Canada and Australia in the late 1940s. Mihailov became the emigrants' ideological leader, and the MPO supplied the people and funds for the political struggle. With the help of the United Nations and various humanitarian organizations, the human rights of Bulgarians repressed by Tito in Yugoslavia were protected. In order to provide a basis for the Bulgarian emigrant movement and create a historical record, Ivan Mihailov started writing his memoires from the 1950s to the 1970s, which the MPO's Central Committee published in four large volumes. These works provide serious proof of Bulgarian national interests from the 50s to the 70s.[13] After the change of Bulgarian policy toward the Macedonian Question in the late 1950s, Mihailov was largely forgotten about and according to some sources even in the 1970s and 1980s the Committee for State Security supported his pro-Bulgarian and anti-Macedonistic political activity.[14] However, in September 1989, Boris Vishinsky, a Skopje journalist, decided to try and interview Mihailov. He expressed his hope for such an interview on Radio Vatican, which contacted Anton Popov, a journalist at the same station. Popov was one of the persons abroad that Ivan Mihailov trusted most. Sensing the impending collapse of Yugoslavia, he consented to such an interview, but only provided written answers. It then came as a real shock for many in Bulgaria when in 1990 at the end of the cold war, the popular TV anchor Kevork Kevorkyan contacted Mihailov, thought by many to be long since deceased, and recorded a long interview with him. After the long years of official propaganda he was still thought of as an "enemy of the people" by many. This was Mihailov's last interview. He died in Rome on 5 September 1990." The ramifications towards Ivanov are probably none because Macedonians are dumb as a pile of rocks. I refuse to believe Ivanov didn't know he was meeting with a Bugaroman organization. Ivanov is a scholar of history and he knows very well who the MPO are and what they stand for. As to the point of the meeting, well that is the real question isn't it. If he knows who the MPO are, why give them the dignity and free press by meeting with them? I think only Ivanov can answer that. It was Meto Koloski, the president of the UMD that organized and facilitated that meeting. So another good question is why does the president of the United Macedonian Diaspora, want the president of Macedonia to meet with an anti Macedonian group? And why does the president agree? Because our organization LOMA, pointed out these facts on twitter, we are now being accused of working for the Zaev government. :death: These are the baboons that we are fighting for.
sorry ahed of time for my ignorance to this topic but what is MPO? who is Vancho Milhalov? what did he do? and why did MPO help him? also What are the ramifications towards president Ivanov and the meeting with MPO? and what is the point of the meeting? thanks
|
Fark.. what crazy shit ay re MPO? That just blows my mind away. How many members do they have and what kind of resources do they utilise? Have they kicked any goals? Which part of Macedonia do they mainly come from?

What's this about Ivanov meeting with the MPO? I thought he just met with the UMD who accept donations from them.

They have theoretically been a dwindling group, but they infiltrate everywhere. They come mainly from Lerin-Kostur-Prespa-Bitola region, though some are from other places. |

Meto helped facilitate some meetings between MPO members (current and former, but who knows really their status) and President Ivanov. Meto also went with Ivanov and the Macedonian Ambassador to the Macedono-Bulgarian church in Detroit, where there are still MPO members. Actually, the current priest of that Macedono-Bulgarian church (which falls under the Bulgarian Synod) left the St. Mary's MOC in Detroit three years ago after he tried to oust St. Mary's other priest and the North American MOC Bishop. He took several followers with him. UMD also honored a long time MPO member at their Saturday night gala, Evelyn Dinu. |

Here is a link to MPO's website, which in part describes some of Dinu's work with them. http://macedonian.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=55&Itemid=66 Here's UMD's honoring of Dinu: https://umdiaspora.org/2018/08/22/umd-to-honor-evelyn-dinu/ Dinu also helped formed UMAD, United Macedonian Americans of Detroit, which originally started as something like United Macedonian Churches. While that sounds fine, the goal was to united St. Mary's MOC with St. Clement BOC, which has a congregation of Bulgarians and Macedonians. The priest at St. Mary's told them we cannot unite with the Bulgarian church, as simple as that. So they evolved into UMAD, which focused for a few years on more joint events between the two different communities. Previous examples of celebrating joint events between the two different communities included the viewing of Jason Miko's A Name is a Name. At this joint viewing, before the film started, MPO members that were there began playing the Bulgarian anthem after the Macedonian anthem. This caused a minor ruckus, but the MOC Macedonians got them to stop playing the anthem. They thought this was a success and proceeded to sit there with the other group and watch the entire documentary. It's good to remember that MPO (current and former members) are for an independent Macedonia, at least many of them are. They say they're Macedonians. However, when you dig deeper, they may say some of the following a) we're Macedonians but ethnically Bulgarian; b) we have a common history with the Bulgarians; and c) Yugoslavian Macedonians were brainwashed because of communism to think that we're closer to Serbs than we are to Bulgarians. MPO still officially uses the Bulgarian language. Dinu and Evanoff clearly fall into categories b and c, while Evanoff has made statements in the past, and Evanoff may fall into category a (he did at one time). For example, Evanoff's father was a supporter of the Bulgarian army during WW2, as in he was aligned with the IMRO Mihailov, faction. His name was Cyril John, I believe. He came to America in the 1950s saying he was escaping communism, but really he was escaping Macedonia for his support of the Bulgarian occupation. MPO branded itself as a non-communist organization in the 1920s and 1930s. This put them squarely against the Macedonian movement for a separate nation and language, which of course was supported by the Comintern. The Macedonian American People's League, for example, relentlessly advocated for this independent Macedonian nation and language and exposed MPO's ties to fascist Bulgaria and Ivan Miahilov; and in turn, the MPO would testify to journalists, FBI agents and Congress (I wrote about this in my George Pirinsky book) that the MAPL was truly a communist controlled organization. Thus, people like Dinu and Evanoff say they're anti-communists, which really stems from the tradition of being anti-separation of Macedonian and Bulgarian interests. Thus, when RoM became independent, they worked tirelessly to help keep Macedonia independent, but also to strengthen ties between Bulgaria and Macedonia. For example, Evanoff, as president of the MPO, collaborated with Bulgarian politicians on several projects and also got the Macedonian newspaper of the MPO, in the Bulgarian language, published and circulated in Macedonia. Now you see them (like Evanoff and Dinu) making statements, as they're losing followers, that we need to united Macedonians despite their religious, political and historical differences. Which, if you think about it in the context of everything MPO has done, really means to reacquaint Macedonians with the Mihailov ideology and to make that relevant again to the Macedonian identity. Evanoff, while president of the MPO, had been accused by the more outright Bugaromani of introducing Macedonianism into the MPO. This was two-fold: a) in addition to inviting Bulgarian politicians to their events, he started inviting Macedonian politicians (including Ljubco Georgievski and Dimitar Dimitrov, Nikola Dimitrov's father (as well as Nikola himself)) to MPO's convention; and b) he advocated for more joint cooperation with other Macedonian organizations (hence collaboration with UMD during certain points of UMD's existence). The Lebamoff and other very pro-Bulgarian "Macedonians" didn't like this, so they constantly feuded. The Lebamoff faction mostly only invites Bulgarian politicians to their events, but sometimes Macedonian Ambassadors still go. At the MPO convention this year, I do know at least that the Bulgarian Ambassador to the US was in attendance. How can we reasonably expect that people (like Evanoff and Dinu as well as many others) who have been entrenched in the MPO since the 1960s and 1970s are really naïve to the ulterior motives of the MPO or have drastically changed their outlook, when there is no real evidence that they have? Why let these people in your advisory council and why honor them, and why take the president of Macedonia to one of their strongholds (St. Clement church in Detroit) where he meets and mingles with them? The honest answer, in my opinion, is UMD needs/wants their political connections and financial contributions. But what are they potentially getting in return? My dad wrote these two letters to President Ivanov a month ago, highlighting the situation. Lot of this can't be verified by links to websites, but I can vouch for it that my dad and many other Detroit Macedonians have fighting against MPO and their followers for decades now.

This is very interesting, thank you. Do you have any links to Ivanov visiting the MPO and/or the Bulgarian church? |

Ivanov showing his true colours?
Ivanov showing his true colours?
Well, he is adamantly against the name deal with Greece and just encouraged people to not vote when he spoke at the UN. So, that is good. On the flip side, he supports the Friendship Treaty with Bulgaria and he went to the Bulgarian Church in Detroit this past weekend. There hasn't been an explanation from him why he supports a treaty that requires Macedonia to celebrate Ilinden with Bulgaria and to create a common history. He's just stated that he supports the economic advantages that it will bring and the European perspectives. Regarding the church attendance, there's a small chance that he may have not known Meto and others helped schedule a visit to a Bulgarian Church, that is to be fair, attended by several Macedonians. Still, to knowingly give the Bulgarian Synod equal treatment as the MOC in a time when the Macedonian-America public is a) suspicious that our church may change its name or become a part of another church; and b) is strongly against the Friendship Treaty...well, that's disheartening to say the least. Someone in Ivanov's circle had to have known, or should have known, what is up. They are not that naïve. Macedonian politicians have been associating themselves with the MPO and going to the Bulgaro churches for some time now. I can't help but suspect that a Macedonian reorientation toward Bulgaria is becoming normalized within the republic. |
Unfortunately people have ulterior motives such as financial gain, ego related, power ambitions, career progression and downright mental illness which drives them. Macedonians are the same every where in this regard, I've seen it in our churches, soccer clubs, business and family. You know the mentality ne chinit pa jas chinam.. all the same crap. True Macedonians are long dead and never to return, the ones that picked up the gun, left their impoverished selo and family and never returned. The rest today will take your soul, your money and if you are not careful I zeneta. So be careful of the Macedonian.

I think we might be glorifying the "True Macedonians". If we met them in real life, they probably would have been as shifty as they come. All of this is nothing more than human nature. The only ones whose intentions can easily be interpreted are the filthy rich and the filthy poor. Everyone else in the middle of all that is just distracted with their own little dramas.
|
Just missing a key attributes which separates them, that is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their cause and bravery? I'd choose and glorify the "shifty" fighter Macedonian. You'd find that the greedy types are less willing to give than take.. I think we shouldn't diminish the sacrifice made by some and throw them in the Same basket as today's mob ;) yes no one is perfect but fighting is also human nature..
what defines/makes a "true Macedonian"?
It's irrelevant. What is more important is the distinction between good and bad Macedonians. True Macedonians are everywhere, doesn't mean they are good for Macedonia.

Sorry agreed True Macedonians are everywhere.

Vic,
Thanks for all that recent info! As you know, I was familiar with that church when younger and recall several Macedonian "uprisings". I recall whispers of MPO, usually with a Macedonian or English curse word in from of it. I also recall graffiti in the men's room. Have not been their in decades, did not realize the politics until many years later and am still learning. I just recall we always had Macedonians, Bulgarians , a few "Greeks", and Armenians. (The Greeks didn't speak Greek ;))We also had a few "Amerikanski" from the surrounding are, which was cool. I do know that several years ago I heard a story that Mike Ilitich offered them a sum of money to either combine with one of the MOC's or to repair St. Clement. They chose the latter. (Can you confirm or debunk this?). I'd be interested. I always recall hearing MPO in whispers there, but was raised 100% Macedonian. This vote thing is killing me... |
UMD reiterates its unwavering support for retention of the one and only constitutional and rightful name of Macedonia, rejects all attempts to change or impose any other name upon Macedonia and the Macedonian people, and calls upon the Macedonian government to cease the ongoing UN talks and to submit a resolution before the UN General Assembly to be re-admitted to the UN under its one and only constitutional and rightful name — the Republic of Macedonia.
A far cry from their stances back in the day. While Macedonia is currently dealing with relentless political attacks from Bulgaria, the UMD are meeting with Bulgars in the U.S. to "strengthen bridge-building dialogue between Bulgaria and Macedonia". Are these the same bridges as those built between the UMD and the MPO when they got screwed by the latter during the U.S. census? At this moment, what possible dialogue could there be with these people if the starting point isn't a condemnation of their government's despicable attitude towards Macedonians in general? Even if there is nothing sinister about the meeting, the timing couldn't be more terrible. It's almost Zaevesque the way they appear to be doing PR for good neighbourly relations at a time when Bulgaria is literally trying to destroy the heritage of Macedonia.

There is no bridge.
There is nothing to strengthen. Seriously though, given the UMD's monumental failure in relation to the MPO, you would think they might tread very lightly on Bulgarian matters. Instead, there they go again. |

I guess it comes down to priorities and alignment. Bulgaria attacks Macedonia, the UMD follow the example of SDS and extend their hand in friendship to the Bulgars. Macedonian sovereignty is insulted both inside and outside of the country, the UMD follow the example of SDS, who feel there are more important matters to address, like promoting a "Skopje pride" march. Opportunism. Monkey see, monkey do. Whatever. Nero also supposedly fiddled while Rome burned. |

“Macedonians in Canada prepare to celebrate ancestral nation’s 30th Independence Day In the years after Macedonia declared its independence in 1991, Toronto lawyer Chris Paliare spent time travelling around the GTA trying to get local governments to recognize the country by raising its flag at city halls to celebrate its Independence Day. It didn’t go well. Paliare, a Macedonian whose family has been in Canada more than 100 years, said most cities refused to fly the flag on the grounds Canada had not yet recognized what is now officially called North Macedonia as a country. It was disheartening, he said. “It was stunning to me that a country that values freedom of association, that values all of the items we have ingrained in the charter, that somehow this group, unlike any other ethnic groups, was not going to be allowed to celebrate the birth of its new nation,” he said. “It was inconceivable to me.” Now, decades after the breakup of Yugoslavia led to Macedonia’s nonviolent independence, Toronto’s large Macedonian community is preparing to celebrate the 30th independence day for the nation on Wednesday. Things are different from the early ’90s. The challenges Paliare once had seeking recognition of the country in the city are no more. Wednesday, the CN Tower and Niagara Falls will be lit up with the colours of the North Macedonian flag, as part of celebrations that are otherwise toned down due to COVID-19. The country borders five other nations, including Greece and Serbia, and is home to about 2 million people. The Macedonian community abroad numbers about 4 million, with up to 150,000 people claiming the ancestry living in Canada, according to the Canadian Macedonian Historical Society. The largest concentration is in Toronto. Paliare said when the country declared its independence in 1991, it gave a boost of pride to the community in Toronto. Macedonians had been spread around Europe and the world with no country to call their own for more than 100 years. “It didn’t take away from our love of being Macedonian, or our love of the culture or our hopes and aspirations that someday we would have our country back,” he said. There was a time when he didn’t think he would see it actually happen, but the dissolution of Yugoslavia brought the change quickly. “I never expected it in my lifetime,” Paliare said. “It was not something we ever anticipated.” While Macedonians work toward building the country, the diaspora around the world has helped efforts. But the Macedonian community in Toronto on its own has a history of helping develop the country. One of the key people from the city was Toronto businessman John Bitove, who helped organize efforts to have the country recognized internationally. His son, Toronto Star publisher and honorary consul to the Republic of North Macedonia, Jordan Bitove, said his father was a tireless advocate for the nation. “My dad and all Macedonians longed for a day that they could have a place that they could actually call Macedonia,” Bitove said. “So, with me, there’s a lot of emotion around the date.” Paliare said no Canadian worked harder to have the country recognized than John Bitove. The two worked together with politicians there and with the community in Toronto to work toward international recognition. “No one really led the charge like John,” Paliare said. “Both in terms of time and money. And boundless energy.” But it hasn’t been all smooth since the 1991 declaration. The country joined NATO and aims to join the European Union. But a step toward realizing these goals was agreeing to officially call itself the Republic of North Macedonia in order to gain Greece’s support in 2019. Greece contended the use of simply Macedonia suggests territorial claims in Greece’s northern Macedonia province and objected to the country claiming the name. Recently, relations between the two countries have warmed with both countries’ foreign ministers last week confirming ties have deepened since 2019. But the name change remains unpopular in Macedonia, according to Meto Koloski, president of the United Macedonian Diaspora, who spoke to the Star from the country where he is attending celebrations this week. “Everybody that I’ve spoken to is against it,” Koloski said, “but we understand it is a necessary evil in a way.” As the country grows its IT sector, tourism and natural resources are playing a part in its economic development, he said. Meanwhile, in Toronto, the presence of the community remains palpable across the city. Once bound tightly by community churches, Bitove said, the original immigrants came to Canada and worked low-paying jobs in factories or restaurants with subsequent generations going into other fields, like medicine. After the country declared its independence, he said, some people he knew over time began to claim the heritage who did not previously. At the same time, it became less of a struggle to explain to people he was Macedonian. “When I went to school, and I would identify as a Macedonian, nobody knew what that meant,” Bitove said. “When independence happened, it was actually the first time you could say you’re Macedonian and people understood.” |

So much for interpreting the will of the Macedonian people or being their voice. If one reads some of his earlier statements documented on this thread, they would realise he has been spewing up trash like this for many years, sometimes more subtle than not. Meto Koloski is a treacherous opportunist and any Macedonian (or non-Macedonian) that squanders their time, money or resources in support of the UMD either knows this and doesn't care because it aligns with their own agenda or is clueless about his intentions. In some respects, he is worse than an overt traitor. At least the latter has some principles, pathetic as they may be. |

In the most important way, he is nothing more than a traitor. He has been whoring himself for relevance since the early days. He is an unnecessary evil. |
