Australian Standard Classification of Cultural and Ethnic Groups

Released at 11.30am (Canberra time) 16 August 2011

It is with great pleasure i announce, that the Australian Bureau of Statistics have finally removed the racist, derogatory and demeaning reference of 'Macedonian Slav' and 'Slav Macedonian', from the Australian Standard Classification of Cultural and Ethnic Groups.

Many thanks to those who have worked behind the scenes to make this happen.

I have always remembered the Federal Governments support of Greek Racism in the 90's and Australia’s recusal to recognise Macedonian Statehood whilst it recognises rouge States like Kosovo and only recently recognised Libyan Terrorists as Democrats but still not Macedonia

I never ever knew the Australian Government discriminated inthis example I thought it was a short Victorian Kennet era battle we defeated, it makes me proud that in my family I don’t vote in Federal elections and have always demonstrated who I am on Census night

Do you feel proud in the same way the Macedonians in Macedonia who don't vote do?

zarni my sentiments exactly. You would think a democratically elected govt such as an australian govt .It's people who are freedom loving would respect macedonia. But the mighty greek vote of a million votes speaks louder. The australian govt hasn't got the real balls to say a spade is a spade & recognize macedonia..It should be on principles of self identification & human rights but it isnt.

Sadly, politics is a numbers game...even more disturbing is when our limited numbers are further diluted by voters deciding to 'abuse' the system...
