    Kaurin & Chokalija

    I'm aware that Kauri is a label that Macedonians adopted most likely from the Turkish word giaour meaning 'Non believer'.

    The Serbs sometimes refer to Macedonians as Chokalija.
    I have heard many stories behind this, one is, long ago, Macedonians sold wooden bowels at the markets and they got this name as a result of that.

    Anybody know more?

    This sounds like a Turkish word again.

    It might be "çakal, chakal". It actually means jackal, an animal but when we use it for people in Turkish, it means a profiteer, devious mercenary man. It usually used for the tradesman who overcharges for the stuff he sells and who tries to rob people.

    By the looks of it, English/Romance word "jackal" seems like a derivation of Turkish word "çakal".

        Chokalija is derogatory term for Macedonians, used exclusively in Serbia.

        It comes from turkish words Çok-akilli, ironically meaning "very smart".

        The explanation for Kaur was correct, it comes from turkish ğaur and means non-believer, heretic, it's a Muslim term for Christians.

          Btw what would be the reason of this phenomenon?? Serbs using even more Turkish words than Greeks, Macedonians, Bulgarians??? cuz they hate from us at most?? hehe

          Serbs themselves says that there was more than 13.000 Turkish words in Serbian language in 1920s, about 9000+ in 1970s and more than 4000+ today. Even Turkish language association in Ankara says that the Serbian language has the most Turkish words among all other languages in the world!!! more than Bosnians, lol

            The village Serbs to this day still use the Turkish "Yok" for No instead of "Ne"
