From the 70's till independence, Bitolcani often shopped in Lerin the same way Greek citizens shop at Bitola PAZAR today. I am sure they came across and were aware people in Egej speaking Macedonian.

For sure, and majority would have lived there once.

What of the multitude of villages along the 'border', are you suggesting those people don't know about the people over the other 'side'?
I am just as surprised as you are, but it's more common then you think, I have heard from Macedonians (from both sides) who say they had no idea the people on the other side were nashi until they immigrated to Canada/Australia. But it kind of makes sense that the government policy of both Greece and then Yugoslavia was to discourage people from going for fear of Macedonians discovering their brothers. WHo knows how many people bought into their lies

I still can't believe this...although very little surprises me anymore.
The one point I'd like to make is that I question how widespread this ignorance is.
Like I said in a previous post, I think you'd have to be from some pretty backward village somewhere in the darkest corner of Macedonia to hold such a view.

Many who should know better actually believe many Egejci are Greeks who learned the Macedonian language. We're not talking about remote villages. I've seen it with my own eyes. Often. A massive shock for us in the diaspora who know Macedonians from everywhere.

The Republic of Macedonia still has communism in its veins. It was the commie education system that discouraged any notion of a diaspora, let alone an accurate historical education! It was all about an inward looking socialist Yugoslavia. This heritage remains because noone has bothered to stand up. They're all looking back to "comfy" yugoslavia and even instilling a sense of fake nostalgia to a generation of young adults that were born after Macedonia left Yugoslavia.

Regarding the mayor of Ofcharani and the formal initiatives, I am so pleasently surprised and impressed that the Macedonians in Greece are starting to organise themselves. I wasn't sure if i'd ever live to see them wake up and demand their rights. )

Change must come from within oneself only then can real change occur.

Bitola and my dever is only a baby.. 22 so maybe a bit young for this kind of stuff?

Maybe they just werent expecting it to be as widespread as it was.
