    Is this a joke? Didn’t Turkey have a military coup just one year before (in 1980)?

    Thomas Niles’ opinion is welcome and interesting, since it’s not diplomatic, but… wait. Niles was the American ambassador in Athens. What the hell does Cyprus’ entry in European Union has to do with USA?

      So? Greece had a 8 years long colonel Junta regime `till 1974 and Turkey saved you from that. Yes, there was a military coup in 1980 in Turkey but they totally left the parliament in 2 years. But what`s this got to do with EU? especially today, after 31 years from 1980?

      Thomas Niles is just expressing what he saw while he was in Athens. Actually i have to ask like "Whatta hell EU has to do with Cyprus problem?" Cyprus problem was existed b4 Greek side joined the EU and EU cant and wont have a word for it maybe except British cuz they partly have responsibility for Cyprus too.

        There was a district called "Maras, Varosha-Famagusta" in Cyprus. It was one of the most luxurious place in whole Europe once. There was only big hotels and few luxurious villas belong to the movie stars and richest people in Europe.

        Maras, Varosha before the war of 1974

        When Greek Junta army invaded Cyprus in 1974, most people in whole district has been evacuated and few remaining ones(ie. owners of hotels) left it when Turkish military operation begun. The invasion of Greek Junta was totally unexpected and most people(mostly tourists) didn't even have a chance to pickup their cloths and personal stuff when they left the island. Everyone left the town in panic because Greek Junta entered the island with war tanks and immediately destroyed the parliament building of united Cyprus with bombs and they immediately seized the whole island to look for the Greek Cypriot PM of 1974, called Makarios and also so-called communists, the enemies of Hellenism to kill them.

        Maras is right on the middle of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot border today, serving as a buffer zone between Turks and Greeks. Turkey didn't get that part of the island cuz most of the properties in there belong to the foreigners. It`s a restricted area since 1974 and forbidden to enter except for few UN soldiers.

        So, no one except few UN soldiers stepped in there since 1974. it`s a ghost town for 37 years and only a home for birds.

        In 2007, United Nations allowed one journalist to enter that district and take some photos. Here are few photos from once luxurious but today`s ghost town of Maras, 2007;

        Hard to believe there is a place like that in EU, right? But there is one...

              Wikipedia doesn't say something different than i wrote.

              Ofc it`s obvious that a pro-Greek person wrote that on wikipedia and he never even mentions that about ~25.000 fully equipped soldiers of fascist Greek Junta came from Greece to Cyprus, 5 days before first Turkish soldiers step on the island. During that 5 days, Varosha was already evacuated and Turkish army just secured the area by building a fence around it to prevent the buildings and the area to stay unharmed. Ofc in 1974, no one could guess that it will stay as a ghost town for 37 years.

              Also wiki article relates like Turks controlling the area. Thats wrong. Varosha is under control of UN soldiers since 1974.

              So, it wasn't the Turkish soldiers who came to island at first. It was the soldiers from Greece who arrived in there and they even destroyed the parliament of united Cyprus with tanks and killed 100s of Greek Cypriots who protested the Junta`s coup d`etat in the streets.

                Clearly this is the collateral consequence of the Greek junta.
                Onur's observations seem far more entrenched in realism than some of the fantastic Greek perspectives on Cyprus.

                  the photos say it all.

                    Actually there are more than that. The oppression and massacres of Turkish Cypriots began 10 years earlier than 1974. Turkish Cypriots was about 25% of the whole population in Cyprus in early 1960s and everything begun when Greek Cypriots formed EOKA-B to exterminate Turkish presence in the island and unite Cyprus with Greece. They forced all the Turkish people to leave their homes and all other proprieties and live in the ghettos which only consists of 2-3 district. So, they forced 25% of population to live in 2% of the island. This continued for 10 years `till 1974 and half of the Turkish people in the island immigrated out to Australia and England during that time.

                    I just found some reports from the archives of British ITN media website. There are 100s of reports like that from international media but you can never see a Greek mentions about these events. They keep it hidden and only talk about so-called "invasion of Turkish troops" in 1974.

                    This one is a video report from 07 February 1964. EOKA terrorists raids in to a Turkish village, kills 16 people and burns down whole village cuz they refused to leave their village for ghettos. Unfortunately ITN mutes the preview of the video but everything is clear from the footage;

                    One year later, British journalist reports in 24 March 1965. There are scenes of the Turkish ghettos where about 10-20 children lives in one small room. Greek Cypriots puts down more pressure to all the Turks and then they are trying to be ready if Turkish army comes for helping the Turks in the island. Greeks even restricts food and water supply to the Turkish ghettos while Turkey try to send food to them. Greeks protesting in the streets against the presence of UN security force who just tries to help Turks and ease the tension. British reporter says that Greek forces opens fire to the UN soldiers and prevents them helping to the Turks. Greeks don't even allow neither press nor UN forces to enter to the areas of conflict. Watch this one, it has extensive report and this video has sound too;

                      Be careful, not too much truth at once, they can't cope with it, you may have to resort to little truths at a time so they can get their feeble minds aroud it easier!
                      On Delchev's sarcophagus you can read the following inscription: "We swear the future generations to bury these sacred bones in the capital of Independent Macedonia. August 1923 Illinden"
