In a sweeping police operation, larger than "snake eye" Macedonian police arrested 87 employees working at tolls across the country.
The new operation dubbed "Cobblestone" had observed Toll employees along Highway 10 for months. When enough evidence was gathered of abuse of power, not issuing fiscal receipts, issuing fake fiscal receipts etc, the police moved in for the arrest.
The MoI lead by Gordana Jankulovska issued a press release stating Toll and Highway employees have stolen over 120 million denars over the past eight months.
The police was able to identify the leaders of the groups, which saw the involvement of literally everyone employed, including high ranking bosses who were giving the orders and even created lists as to who would be tasked with creating the fake receipts.
What the Highway and Toll employees didn't know is that the police had set up electronic devices at each Toll which counted the number of vehicles passing through. As a result of this, the police found large gap between the number of vehicles who transitted through and what was reported in terms of fiscal receipt by Toll employees.
To make matters worse, at the time of the arrests, many of the Toll and Highway employees had large quantities of cash on them.
All 87 were taken in front of a judge at Skopje's Court 1.
