    Tambura

    Does anyone know where to find a Macedonian Tambura? I hope to be in MKD so i'm considering buying one. Of course, it would be easier to buy one here in Aus, but i'd dare say it'll be easier to find, but harder to travel with from Macedonia.

      thanks Risto, but i can't seem to find it on ebay. Interestingly enough our word for it, Tambura, also describes a sitar-like instrument in Hindi.

          Coolski, I bought my dad a tambura from Macedonia a few years ago and brought it back to Oz. The guy to get them from is called Gievski, he is located in the Stara Carsija and a bit hard to locate. They are of excellent build and sound fantastic. Members of the Dragan Dautevski Quartet have them as do various other Macedonian ensembles, bands and groups.

            wow thanks Brygian Seed. I'm assuming this is in Skopje? I'll be just a beginner, but i'd love to start on an authentic Macedonian made instrument. Also, what kind of price range are the Tamburi from that shop?

              That may have been the guy.
              It was actually listed as a "tambura" when I looked for one a few years ago.

              I would feel better buying one from Macedonia personally. Surely we could gather some resources to find a good manufacturer from Macedonia!

                It looks like the Gievski brothers are the men to buy from. It doesnt seem right buying one from a Bulgarian that is marketing it as a purely greek instrument.

                  Coolski, yes he is in Skopje. They essentially make one type of tambura, that's unless you are after a bass tambura. I believe I paid 400 Euro for the tambura and a very sturdy road case. Gievski is also a bit of a character, with stories of how things use to be in the past etc. It is commonly believed that the tambura originate from the Turko - Persian music tradition, as did the basuk, which is basically a six stringed tambura.

                      I am reading Nicolas de Nicolay`s memoirs of his journey to Ottoman empire these days;

                      He is talking about Azamoglans(low ranked Janissary, acemioglan) in the streets of Istanbul, singing around and playing a stringed instrument which they calls as "tambura". He says that there are a lot of musical instruments but most common one in the streets is Tambura. He has been written this in 1550 AD.;

                        So Brygian Seed, is it a case of showing up to their shop and buying one, or do i need to give them time to make it?
