Normalizing Greece-Macedonia relations once and for all

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has shown courage in his persistence to push through the name deal signed with Greece. This is something the more moderate voices on the Greek side appreciate, as is the fact that when the embattled premier is addressing a domestic audience he needs to highlight the benefits he secured with the agreement rather than the concessions he was forced to make. The latter he will either downplay or not bring up at all.

Nevertheless, at this important juncture for the success of the deal, Macedonia’s prime minister, as well as the Balkan country’s politicians and citizens, need to remember two very important things. First, that the agreement still needs to be ratified by the Greek Parliament, where the balance is also quite shaky and majority support is not a given.

The second is that even when the deal passes in Greece and Macedonia joins NATO, it will still face a slew of issues on which it will need Athens’s support and cooperation. Maintaining the existing level of tension will only prove harmful to Macedonia’s long-term interests.

In the meantime, international players who are investing in a successful outcome need to understand that implementation of the agreement in the long term is more important than allowing certain over-the-top statements which will only contribute to the detriment of the deal’s long-term success.

I am referring here to Zaev’s recent comment in response to an opposition politician’s question regarding the right of the “Macedonians of the Aegean” to be taught the “Macedonian” language. This needs to be the West’s strategic priority if what it is seeking is stability in the Balkans.

The frustration on the Greek side – expressed more discreetly by governing SYRIZA and much more vocally by opposition New Democracy – is absolutely justified.

One of the key principles of the Prespes name deal is that the two countries will not meddle in each other’s domestic affairs, and this is being enshrined in the changes being introduced to Macedonia’s constitution.

The issue at hand is not to hide the problems so that the deal goes through. Such an approach may lead to an even bigger crisis in the future – between two NATO members. At the same time, although it may not halt Macedonia’s process of accession to the European Union, it will certainly complicate it.

The goal should be to normalize relations between Athens and Skopje once and for all to the benefit of both countries. And that cannot be achieved with statements aimed solely at domestic audiences which end up alienating and angering the people in the other country.

We have to allow Albanians to have Albanian language schools, roads, signs, and everything else under the sun. But the mere mention that Macedonians in Greece being taught their mother tongue is an over the top provocation.

This whole thing is downright sick. Anyone who can sit idly by and either take this, or condone it, whether from the inside or externally, is sick. A special place in hell is reserved for these bureaucrats who watch from a far and cheer on this sadistic behavior.

This is a perfect illustration of European double standards where their policies on the protection of Human Rights are concerned. The paper on which they are written on is quite simply not even worth wiping your arse with.
They claim they stand for Human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, values which are apparently embedded in the EU treaties. They even have an EU Charter of Fundamental Rights - a clear and strong statement of EU citizens' rights. Apparently, fundamental rights are guaranteed nationally by the constitutions of individual countries and at EU level by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights which was adopted in 2000 and is binding on all EU countries since 2009 (all except Greece and Bulgaria it seems).

To demonstrate its commitment to Human Rights, the EU has come up with more fancy and important sounding names than you can poke a stick at. Such as the 2012 strategic framework on human rights and democracy which is designed to make EU human rights policy more effective and consistent. The Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy (2015-2020) provides an agreed basis for a truly collective effort by both EU countries and the EU institutions.
This all sounds wonderful until you realise who the EU appointed for its first ever EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Mr Stavros Lambrinidis. Talk about the Devil being in the detail.
Bottom line is – No Human Rights for the Macedonians in Greece. As far as the EU is concerned, they can sing their damn songs in their local idiom and dance to their gypsy music in their little villages but that's all they're getting. That is all the EU charters can afford to the Macedonians in Greece. It's quite clear, the charters were designed to protect the rights of poofers, lesbians, trannies, paedophiles and other human abominations but in no way were they designed to protect or uphold any cultural rights of the ethnic Macedonian minority in Greece and Bulgaria. So much for the EU Charters and their empty promises.

The Parliament of Republic of Macedonia is prepared to remove a reference in the constitution referring to citizens living outside the Balkan country’s borders as “Macedonians living abroad,” describing them instead as emigrants, local Telma TV reported on Saturday.

The specific reference has been the source of friction between Athens and Skopje since the foreign ministers of the two countries signed the so-called Prespes name accord in June.

The two sides had at the time agreed that Macedonia’s constitution would be revised along the lines of Article 108 in the Greek Constitution which states that “the state must take care of Greek emigrants and the maintenance of their ties with the fatherland.”

Тоне сонцето со шеснаесет краци, слободен пад од небото до бесконечноста, а дното сеуште не е допрено, сеуште не се слушна тој пад кој треба да не отрезни…тоне и она со осум краци, во калта и црнилото кое се таложат од нивните измеќарски гардероби на скитници кои не знаат кои се и што се, а кои навидум изгледаат скапо и отмено…Се мирисаат со најскапите парфеми а смрдат на предавство, трула миризба на луѓе кои се распаѓаат, нивните лица се сушат пред чадот создаден од нагонот за пироманство да гори се што потсеќа на Македонија, Македонско, Македонци…

И повторно кутрите слуги на режимот по налог на олигархијата и предавниците вршат упади во нашите домови !

Што ли се обидуваат да пронајдат? А во иднина ништо чудно и да подметнат!
Мора да има причина зошто толку упорно си ја сакаме својата земја, тоа не може да е едноставно нагон на родољубие, да си го сакаме она кое го имаме, да мечтаеме за она што е наше а е одземено на неправеден начин, затоа што посилните така одлучиле…

Не, не никако тоа, мора да има причина…Мора да има некоја мрачна сила која не храни со зли намери за да бидеме толку упорни и при сите притисоци повторно да ни е природен само еден пат, патот кон самопочитта, патот кон вечноста кој не води преку ископаните ровови од нашите предци каде сеуште не е исушена крвта која ја пролеаа за да имаме парче земја кое можеме гордо да кажеме дека е наша, Македонска…

Тоа е нашиот пат браќа Комити, тоа е нашата судбина наши браќа и сестри Македонци и Македонки, одбрани сме да страдаме за својата земја, за своите, па дури и за оние кои сега не предаваат свесно и несвесно…Но нашиот пат е зацртан, нашите цели се јасни, плачот на нашите срца не може ништо да го смири освен целосна победа и прегазување на надворешните и внатрешни непријатели, компромисот тешко дека е возможен.

Зарем историјата не е прочитана? Зарем не знаат или не чуле за Комитите и Војводите? Зарем помислија дека оние кои заминаа на Мечкин камен веруваа дека ќе ја добијат битката? Колку се само наивни и мали…не научија дека тие тие свесно заминаа во својата смрт затоа што тоа беше единствената алтернатива на Слободата. Тие не можат да го разберат нашиот фанатизам затоа што не се препознаваат во нашата историја, не ги ценат своите предци и газат врз нивните мошти за да донесат и да ни продадат погрешни вредности, вредности кои за нас не значат ништо доколку ја нема нашата Македонија, онаква каква што ја имаме, онаа за која сонуваме, за која се будиме и легнуваме, за која дишеме, за која живееме…

Дигнете се браќа Комити, и бидете спремни да го одбраниме нашиот вечен идеал за Слобода, затоа што ако нема Слобода има само Смрт !!!

Many of them do care. My best friend growing up can be considered one of these football ultras/komiti. I know quite a few of them. A lot of them are good people, very loyal to each other, the type of people you would want as friends.

The problem is that a lot of them are "drapaci". They see this komita thing as a persona. A lot of them only believe it skin deep and are only vocal about it in large groups and on social media. Also a large number of them are typical hooligans who just want to bust something up.

Then even a lot of the ones who care are not that intellectually strong, so they have trouble articulating things and applying their beliefs in real time.

When you peel backs the layers very few of them are useful in the way that is required right now.

There are people in Macedonia who care. Unfortunately they are a minority and they are from many different walks of life so it is hard to bring them together in to some kind of cohesive uprising.

At the end of the day any resistance you can muster has to culminate into some kind of political movement, other wise you are leaving all the power and decision making in the hands of the same criminals and traitors as in the first place. Going one step backwards now, its hard to turn a movement into a political one with out at least close to a majority backing of the people.

That is the frustrating part. That like it or not if you really want this to end and end well, you need a political movement and shift in the politics. It requires the hard work of building up a party and achieving the backing of the majority. Even if you could find a handful of decent and patriotic Macedonians, which there certainly are, the rest of them are shit people and you can't get them on your side.
