The "opposition" created the opportunity for this. They had the Albanian defence minister and they had the coalition from hell and they are waiting to hop right back in as soon as everybody kicks this criminal zaev out. They won't even try to restore any sanity. I'm positive about this.

The current opposition put in a mighty effort to stay in power but now seem totally impotent or apathetic to protecting Macedonia's interests...

They are impotent because they lost the only thing that made them potent, power!

Everyone flocks to the party in power. That "motivation" is and has always been, to latch on to who ever is in power to get something for yourself.

DPMNE "support" has evaporated because they can no longer give out jobs and money. Thus no protests, no outrage. There only way back into power is to promise something more than the current pigs in power, which is what exactly?

If they are against the Zaev agenda they are basically admitting that they are against EU/NATO integration, Macedonian voters want it both ways, they want to get into the EU but they don't want the blood on their hands either. Someone else mentioned Zaev being a good scapegoat for the public, I agree with this line of thinking. Deep down, a lot of people want him to succeed while cloaking themselves in faux outrage.

If you guys are waiting for the white knights of DPMNE, I wouldn't hold your breathe. Don't forget that those bottom feeders brought us to this late stage in the first place, they laid all the groundwork so Zaev can just sign.

Macedonia to send language law to Venice Commission for scrutiny

SKOPJE, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Macedonian government informed Wednesday that it would send the law on the use of languages to the Venice Commission for scrutiny and would then incorporate the Commissions' remarks in the implementation of the law.

The Venice Commission, or the European Commission for Democracy through Law, is the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters.

The law will be reintroduced to parliament on Jan. 29 after being passed on Jan. 11 with 69 votes in favour, despite opposition lawmakers boycotting the session.

The law was returned to parliament as the President Gjorge Ivanov refused to decree it, arguing it violated the constitution.

But government spokesperson Mile Bosnjakovski said Wednesday at a press conference: "The law complies with the constitution and it was supported by majority of Members of Parliament (MPs)."

He added that after approval in parliament on Jan. 29, the law would be sent for assessment to the Venice Commission.

However, the opposition led by VMRO-DPMNE has strongly objected the language law. Representatives of this party told media here Wednesday they would attend the Jan. 29 plenary session to block its approval.

According to the law, the Albanian language will be used in all central government institutions, public companies and departments, courts and local authorities, informally becoming a second official language.

For this reason, VMRO-DPMNE says that the law is discriminatory to languages spoken by other minorities in the country. They have also called the law anti-constitutional because, according to them, it would lead to divisions in society.

Under the current law on languages, the Albanian language only has that status of an official language in areas where Albanians make up over 20 percent of the population.

Whereas under the new law, the official use of Albanian would extend to the entire country, where ethnic Albanians make up around a quarter of the total 2.1 million population.

Didn't the Zaev Gov say that they would send the proposed law to the venice commission last year prior to any attempts to adopt this law in parliament? why now?

Looking forward to the after party within a room packed with EU/US and Albanian flags. In 2018 Zaev will achieve the following if he gets his way:

              - Change the name
              - Make MKD Bi lingual
              - Make the Bulgarian church our 'mother' church
              - Name all the airports and highways after Gligorov
              - Change our constitution to appease the Greeks so that they sleep easy at night
              - Change the schooling history curriculum

And in return we get to join NATO in order to appease the wests paranoia regarding the big bad bear that is Russia and Zaev remains in power for the next 20 years, just like Milo in Crna Gora..

Agreed, but why attribute the Bulgarian church to him though? Is the Serbian church any better?

Looking at it logically in a time where the Zaev gov is openly dismantling the Macedonian state, and in the context of the Bulgarian friendship treaty I find it very coincidental, I don't believe the Macedonian church acted independently, that is unless pro Bulgarian elements exist in our church? I could be wrong?

Does the Macedonian church have anything to gain by joining a broader community that does not recognise it as an independent entity? Not sure.. does Zaev have any thing to gain?

As for the Serb church not a fan at all, they are fascists just like the Greek priest who recently publicly stated that they can shut the port of solun and they "MKD" would be all dead in a week.

                      The following is somewhat encouraging:

Civil associations and movements have organized a protest at the Parliament against, as they stressed, "the anti-constitutional and discriminatory law on billinguality" and against "the anti-Macedonia

                      Skopje, 27 January, 2018 - 16:31 (META)

Civil associations and movements have organized a protest at the Parliament against, as they stressed, “the anti-constitutional and discriminatory law on billinguality” and against “the anti-Macedonian policies that are implemented by the government.”

“We love our fellow minority citizens, but we have to acknowledge who is the host” was stressed at the protest, during which the attendees carried flags with the star of Vergina and they were playing Macedonian folk songs.

The President of the non-government association, “Revival,” Ana Bubinkova – Mijakovska, announced that today’s gathering is “a warning protest against the hastened realization of anti-Macedonian policies in cooperation with other major centers of power” where the Macedonian nation has been sidelined.

She announced that the protests will continue in the forthcoming period and at the protests, by her own admission, a word will be given to the people in order to state its opinions and stances regarding the current developments.”

Macedonia Adopts Albanian Language Law Amid Scuffles

Amid unruly scenes, Macedonia's parliament on Wednesday for a second time adopted a disputed law that extends the official use of the Albanian language across the country

Opposition MPs in Macedonia voiced outrage on Wednesday after the ruling majority adopted the Law on Languages straight away, without taking into consideration their 34,000 amendments submitted to block the bill.

MPs from the opposition right-wing VMRO DPMNE party, which strongly opposed the bill, surrounded the speaker, Talat Xhaferi, for a couple of minutes prior and during the voting.

Former Prime Minister and former VMRO DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski went behind Xhaferi’s desk and tried to meddle with his electronic equipment.

Tension peaked as Xhaferi declared that the bill was adopted, after which Gruevski had a brief scuffle with the speaker, prompting the parliament security to intervene and separate the two.

Despite opposition MPs shouting that the law and the entire procedure was unconstitutional, 64 MPs from the ruling majority voted for the law – seen as the last legal remaining provision stemming from the 2001 peace deal that ended an armed conflict between Albanian insurgents and Macedonian forces.

Parliament already passed this law in January but only few days later President Gjorge Ivanov vetoed it, insisting, like the opposition, that the provision goes against the constitution.

By adopting it for the second time, the law no longer needs the signature from the president to be put into effect.

The only way to annul the bill now, or some of its provisions, would be through an appeal to the Constitutional Court.

The law extends the official use of Albanian over the entire country, in which ethnic Albanians make up around a quarter of the total population of 2.1 million, easing communication in Albanian with institutions like municipalities, hospitals and courts.

The previous law defined Albanian as an official language, but only gave it that status in those areas where Albanians make up over 20 per cent of the local population.

Macedonia's parliament has passed a law extending the official use of the Albanian language, despite protests from the right-wing opposition who say the decision will put the Balkan country's national unity in jeopardy.

Macedonia Passes Law Boosting Albanian Language Status

Macedonia's parliament has passed a law extending the official use of the Albanian language, despite protests from the right-wing opposition who say the decision will put the Balkan country's national unity in jeopardy.

Sixty-four lawmakers in the 120-member parliament voted to adopt the law on March 14, without a debate requested by the opposition.

Lawmakers from the right-wing opposition party, the VMRO-DPMNE, staged protests against the measure -- which had already been passed in January, but was again put up for a vote after conservative President Gjorge Ivanov vetoed it.

The president must now sign it into law following the new vote.

Outside the parliament building, several hundred protesters demonstrated against the law, but the protests passed without incident.

Macedonian is the primary official language, but ethnic Albanians make up around a quarter of Macedonia's two million people.

Albanian has until now been an official language only in areas where the minority makes up at least 20 percent of the population.

The new law will boost the use of Albanian at a national level, including in administrative, health, judicial, police, and other official matters.

It can also be used in parliament by the ethnic Albanians' elected representatives.

The adoption of the law was a demand of Macedonia's ethnic Albanian parties before they agreed to join a ruling coalition with the Social Democrats last year.

Ethnic Albanian rebels waged an insurgency against Macedonian authorities in 2001. More than 100 people were killed in the insurgency, which ended with an agreement providing greater rights for the minority.

If this doesn't cause riots, then the Fyromians won. And they may as well be called Albanians from now on.

Looking at the photo of the protesters outside parliament in the above article, I can't help but notice that the majority of participants are over 50 years of age. It would indeed seem that the Macedonian state is currently on its death bed.
