    Greece Expelled From Handball Tournament

...for refusing to play against Macedonia. Is this true?

If it is, good on the EHF. These Greeks are acting like bums.

The European Handball Federation, EHF, excluded the Greek women’s handball team from the championship in Skopje after Greece refused to play FYROM amid an ongoing dispute over the Balkan country’s official name. The European Handball Federation, EHF, excluded the Greek women’s handball team from the championship in Skopje after Greece refused to play [Macedonia] amid an ongoing dispute over the Balkan country’s official name.

The EHF excluded Greece from competing on Wednesday and fined the country’s Handball Federation 25,000 euros after the Greek national team left Tuesday’s scheduled match, protesting that [Macedonia] team officials were wearing clothing with the name “Macedonia” displayed.

The match – part of the championship played by cadets under 17 – started after EHF officials persuaded the Greek team to enter the court despite their objections over the name “Macedonia”, which some [Macedonia] officials were wearing on their shirts.

But after just 32 seconds, the Greek Handball Association withdrew its players after which [Macedonia] scored a technical victory of 10 – 0.

Greece has frequently objected to the constitutional name of its neighbour, and has hindered potential NATO membership and the start of EU accession talks over the dispute.

Athens insists that the name “Republic of Macedonia” inherently suggests territorial ambitions beyond its neighbour’s existing borders into the northern Greek province which has been called Macedonia for over 2000 years and thrived in ancient times.

The so-called “constitutional name dispute” between the two countries has been ongoing for 25 years, since the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. Negotiations between them about a mutually accepted constitutional name for [Macedonia] have been painstakingly slow ever since.

Yes, it's true. This may be a picture from this match.

...and apparently fined 25,000 euro for their demented show of petulance.

Imbeciles full of so much hatred.

If they have indeed been fined and also kicked out of the tournament then good on the EHF

The Greek Foreign Ministry replies, saying they pulled out because it was a violation of the Interim Accord:

“According to the interim accord of 1995, [MACEDONIA] can join international organizations only under its provisional name. We witness once again that [MACEDONIA], after gaining membership to an international organization, attempts to violate the interim accord and participate under its constitutional name,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday.
What moronic fools. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Greece has accused the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) of violating a 1995 agreement that normalized bilateral relations between the two states after officials of the Balkan country’s women’s under-17 national handball team showed up wearing “Macedonia” insignia on their jerseys for a match against their Greek counterparts in Skopje.

The GFM follows a shapeshifting strategy when pinning Macedonia to the diabolical Interim Accord...here they demand 'FYROM' be used whereas they throw that insistence out the window when 'FYROM' wants to join NATO or the EU...

So Macedonia abandons the accord and we revert back to standard rules of diplomacy. Macedonia creates this confusion and opportunity for the Greeks. Pathetic.
