Alexander statue in central Athens vandalized

A newly erected statue of Alexander the Great in central Athens was vandalized by unknown individuals, possibly on Tuesday night, media reported.

The vandals painted slogans on the pedestal of the statue, which stands on the corner of Amalias and Vassilissis Olgas avenues, denouncing the ancient warrior king as a killer.

A 45-year-old man from Thessaloniki has filed a police complaint claiming he was physically assaulted by a group of people in the downtown Athens suburb of Exarchia because the T-shirt he was wearing depicted the Vergina Sun, a symbol of ancient Macedonia.

The victim said that he had been walking down the street on Tuesday night with his wife and son in the district – widely known as a haunt of self-styled anarchists – when he was approached by a group of men who punched him in the face and tore at his T-shirt.

He said that they did not harm his wife and child. Police have launched an investigation to identify the assailants.

Probably the work of anarchists, despite their motives there’s not much irony in their actions given that Alexander and his father wreaked havoc on the ancient Athenians.
In the name of the blood and the sun, the dagger and the gun, Christ protect this soldier, a lion and a Macedonian.
