A policeman was injured - Shots from automatic weapons and smoke over the city

Police in Macedonia began early this morning against a company "armed group", he said the police spokesman, on the outskirts of the northern city of Kumanovo, where the 2001 battles had taken place during a rebellion Albanians.

A second official, who asked not to be named, said a police officer was wounded while local media said they heard gunfire from automatic weapons and smoke rises above the city. The operation began at 4 am, the spokesman said.

Helicopters flew over Kumanovo, located 40 km. From Skopje and just south of the northern border of Macedonia with Serbia and Kosovo.

A large Albanian community living in the area, which is part of an Albanian minority which accounts for about 30% of the 2 million citizens of Macedonia.

In 2001, Albanian guerrillas clashed for months with the security forces before western diplomacy to mediate a peace agreement that gave more rights and representation on the Albanians. However its application has been slow and tensions often revived.

Last month police said that about 40 armed men speaking Albanian arrested hostage four police officers near the northern border with Kosovo and then disappeared without trace.

Kumanovo. Macedonian town of Kumanovo is under siege. The gunfire that started at around 4 a.m. this morning continues, the online edition of Macedonian Vecer daily reported.
According to unofficial information the gunfire started at 4 a.m. and several people are reportedly injured.
The Macedonian Interior Ministry has not confirmed any information about the case.
Local residents comment that the entire town is closed off by the police. They also say that a large group of people dressed in black uniforms was seen last night in the town.
As FOCUS News Agency announced earlier, police in the town of Kumanovo clashed with an armed group of around 70 people at around 4:30 a.m. this morning.
          More to follow.

Kumanovo. Macedonian police have entered into an exchange of fire with unknown armed men in the town of Kumanovo this morning, Macedonian online news edition MKD reported.
The media informs that the gunfire probably occurred after the authorities raided a house and then entered into clashes with the group.
Local residents claim that three officers of the special forces have been injured.
Another theory says that an armed group had blocked the exit of the town and then an exchange of fire with the police started.
It is said that later on the group withdrew into the Dilo Seliste residential quarter. Several people are reportedly injured.
No gunfire is heard in Kumanovo at the moment.
Spokespersons of the Macedonian Interior Ministry in Skopje and Kumanovo do not answer their phones.
Armoured personnel carriers are seen in the town, while helicopters have been flying over the town since the early morning.
Yesterday the media announced that an armed group from Kosovo had entered the region of Kumanovo, planning to attack local police stations.

According to the media, the rest of the medical establishments in the capital are ready to receive injured people from Kumanovo, too.
The Macedonian town of Kumanovo is under siege and residents of the Divo Seliste residential quarter are not allowed to leave their homes.
There are different theories about what happens in the town.
Some say that the police entered into an exchange of fire with an armed group of 50 people.
Others claim that the police carried out a special operation on confiscation of illegal arms from families in the town and then entered into an exchange of fire.
Third sources say that an armed group form Slupcane tried to attack a military unit in the outskirts of Kumanovo.
Latest information from Kumanovo says that the situation in the town is calm.

Skopje. Clinical Centre in the Macedonian capital city of Skopje is closed off by the police and there are police officers at all exits and entrances of the medical establishment. Bulgaria: Over 10 Injured in Shootout between Police, Armed Group in Kumanovo - Report Photo by BGNES

Over 10 people have reportedly been injured in a firefight between police officers and an armed group in Macedonia’s Kumanovo.

According to unconfirmed reports of a correspondent of Bulgarian news agency BGNES, the clashes have claimed victims and the number of injured stands at 15.

Kumanovo Mayor Zoran Damjanovski, as cited by BGNES, also suggested that people had been killed in the armed clashes.

Although he described the situation in Kumanovo as dramatic, he called on locals to remain calm and not yield to provocations.

The shootout started at around 4 a.m. local time on Saturday. The firefight allegedly intensified around noon.
Local police are reportedly trying to cope with an armed group which has been staying in Kumanovo’s surroundings for several days.

According to unconfirmed reports, the armed group consists of some 50-70 people and they are hiding in a house that has been surrounded by police.

The neighborhood of Diva Naselba has been sealed off, with all roads leading to this part of the town blocked by police.

A Spokesperson for Macedonia’s Interior Ministry made clear that a police operation was underway but refused to disclose details about it.

KUMANOVO – Police have launched a major operation against an “armed group” in northern Macedonia, RFE/RL reports.

A reporter with RFE/RL’s Macedonian Unit reports special police units in armored vehicles have locked down a suburb of Kumanovo, some 40 kilometers north of the capital, Skopje.

There were reports of gunfire early on May 9 in the mainly ethnic Albanian city and unconfirmed reports of injuries, including three police officers.

According to GazetaExpress.com, the armed conflict resulted in five ethnic Albanians being killed.

Residents of “Lagja e Trimave” neighborhood stated that three older people, one young girl and her father were killed, all of them ethnic Albanians.

Sources claim that the smoke is coming out of 2 or 3 houses, but surrounding houses have also been damages.

Police called to citizens to stay at their homes, and prevented journalists to enter the neighborhood.

Residents stated that their homes have been damaged by bullets and are sought refuge to safer environments.

Residents of neighborhood in Kumanovo states that the police forces have stopped the heavy shooting, but sporadic shooting can still be heard. Police forces remain present and police and military helicopters are seen flying over the neighborhood.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said only that police had launched an operation “on previously received information about an armed group,” without elaborating.

Kumanovo was caught up in fighting between government forces and ethnic Albanian rebels in 2001.

That unrest ended months later with a Western-mediated peace plan granting ethnic Albanians greater rights.

In April, around 40 armed men wearing the insignia of a disbanded ethnic Albanian paramilitary group, the Kosovo Liberation Army (UCK), attacked a border post in northern Macedonia, near the border with Kosovo.

              Kumanovo is 60% Macedonian*.

              First reports of casualties.

I am not surprised at this event, I said in an earlier post that Macedonia is at it's most destabilized point since 2001, and that this would be the ideal time for an Albanian attack.

I don't know how organized or even decentralized the Albanian "liberation armies" are currently, but apparent members signaled their intention in Gosinche a week ago. It was a warning that they are still around, armed and ready when the time arises.

I hope not, but these few isolated attacks, like in 2001, could draw Macedonia into a wider civil war like 14 years ago.

                Tense times ahead.

This is exactly what I feared would happen because of all the political fall out. Hopefully this time around the Macedonian armed forces neutralize this before it get larger. We seem better equipped militarily so that a good sign.

Yes, Serbia's Dzandarmerija are guarding the MKD - SRB border as border police on the MKD side has gone to Kumanovo.

Seems like the fighting has intensified again now, however with the time seemingly running out for the terrorists:
