Default Wikipedia - false information

Sites such as Wikipedia have always been susceptible to vandalism and the spread of false information by individuals or groups with a vested interest.

false or inaccurate information that is spread deliberately. It is synonymous with and sometimes called Black propaganda. It may include the distribution of forged documents, manuscripts, and photographs, or spreading malicious rumors and fabricated intelligence. Disinformation should not be confused with misinformation, information that is unintentionally false.

But on controversial topics, Wikipedia articles sometimes descend into a free-for-all, and the information may be biased or inaccurate.

Wikipedia, its growth has been phenomenal, from a handful of web pages 12 years ago to perhaps 20 billion today. And like the articles in Wikipedia, the information on those pages varies in quality.

So what it's saying that anyone can put information in wikipedia...?
This is why Greeks mainly use Wikipedia for proof..lol

Wiki cannot be used for citations in any Universities in Australia , and I think high schools (my son's does not allow it) for this very reason that it is misinformation and propaganda.

DCH, your high school allows Wikipedia to be used as a reference for a project or thesis? Or when you say 'pro' Wikipedia, are you talking about teachers encouraging students to refer to it as a starting point for research? I would be very suprised if it is the first and not the second, because some of the Wikipedia articles look like they've been written in some basement.

like anything on the net you have to take it with a grain of salt. It's true when it comes to the macedonian greece historical issues.Greece will stoop to anything & try & distort facts & figures to suit their propaganda. The greeks have written articles that are derogatory to macedonia (ROM) .When one considers the extent the greeks will go to even writing outright lies in wikipaedia.

All the teachers use to tell us you can find useful info on wikipedia and they always told us to go on wiki when we were researching stuff on the schools comps or laptops.

You can find some useful information on Wikipedia and utilise it as a stepping stone on to concrete sources, but I doubt your teachers would accept it as a reference or citation for a project.

If you submitted an essay for a project at your school, would the following be acceptable:

Macedonia was never a Greek city-state (1), but it did conquer almost of all of the city-states (2) during the time of Phillip and Alexander.

(1) Peter Green, Alexander of Macedon, page XXX
(2) Wikipedia

If the answer is yes and this was acceptable, then I would strongly suggest you have your parents request a refund for your schooling fees.
