Interesting stuff.
I am not convinced about the creation of Romanian literature into Slavonic though.

I wonder with the info we have right now just how "greek" these phanariots really were? This essentially ties in with the philiki eteria. Another jumble of merchants of diverse backgrounds who just so happened to speak romaika.

Thank goodness this author acknowledged the Ottoman ethnic consciousness. It goes strongly against "Greek civilisation for 4000 years" etc etc. And is a much more palatable interpretation in my mind.

The Phanariots, very interesting group of Greek-speaking mixed bag of lollies that served their Islamic masters well while they milked the Christian provinces. I have said it before, Greek-speakers of whatever ilk or origin, as the "administrative class" above the rest of their own kin, were the greatest friends to the Turks for the duration of Ottoman rule in the Balkans.

So why do you think the various Slavonic peoples in the administrative class lost favour in the 17th century?

Because they rebelled and assisted European powers in their drive to rid the Balkans of Ottoman domination, while the Greek-speakers danced with Turks.
