Western Macedonia has fifth highest regional unemployment rate in EU, Eurostat finds

The Greek region of Western Macedonia has the fifth highest regional unemployment rate in the European Union, statistical agency Eurostat said on Wednesday.

The jobless rate in Western Macedonia in 2012 was 29.9 percent. The only regions with higher unemployment were Ceuta (38.5%), Andalucía (34.6%), Extremadura and Canarias (both 33.0%) – all in Spain.

The lowest rates recorded in the regions of Salzburg and Tirol (both 2.5%) in Austria and Tübingen, Oberbayern and Trier (all 2.7%) in Germany.

In total, 10 Greek regions had an unemployment rate of more than 20.8 percent, which is double the EU average.

Western Macedonia was also the region in the EU with the second highest unemployment rate, at 36.8 percent.

The northern Greek region also had the highest youth unemployment rate in the EU, at 72.5 percent.
The Macedonians were always cast aside during the Greek dreamtime of last century.

Interesting that the unemployment rates are similar amongst Macedonians on all sides of the modern borders. Perhaps Macedonians also don't like to work.

Looks like there are no jobs for Macedonians in the overcrowded, useless and corrupt public system.

Last time I checked, Macedonians over there are getting all kinds of pensions: disability, child support, farming, old age, etc etc. The pensions of an elderly couple support a family of 3 generations so of course no one is going to work lol.

          You are right.
But it also should be noted that any new industries were largely favouring the former Turkish nationals introduced to the region.

what industries? Greece will never locate any industry there. Besides the municipal administration and the coal burning (suicide) plant there isn't that much. I once toured the Vitsi Water company in the so-called "Florina Industrial Zone", and was surprised to see that their employees are all Macedonian citizens from Bitola lol.

Cities and Towns in Western Macedonia were heldback for many years due to political reasons, I can only speak for Ohrid at least. Ohrid's new mayor in Bakračeski, they have already begun building new infrastructure, trying to lure businesses, especially ones that were discouraged with former mayor Petreski's dealings.
