      MHRMI/AMHRC Call for Reinstatement of All Original Macedonian Names in Mala Prespa...

      MHRMI and AMHRC Call for the Reinstatement of All Original Macedonian Names in Mala Prespa and Golo Brdo

      Toronto, Canada and Melbourne, Australia (March 19, 2013) - Following the Albanian Parliament's long-overdue decision to reinstate the original Macedonian name of the village of Pustec, Macedonian Human Rights Movement International (MHRMI) and the Australian Macedonian Human Rights Committee (AMHRC) call for the reinstatement of all Macedonian names in the regions of Mala Prespa and Golo Brdo in Albania. The Albanian government had previously renamed Pustec using the Albanian name "Liqenas" in an attempt to suppress the Macedonian identity of the region.

      Albania must also immediately end its state-sponsored persecution of its large Macedonian minority and ensure that Macedonians have instruction in the Macedonian language in all levels of education and throughout the country, not just in official "minority zones".

      Ironically, European Union members Greece and Bulgaria continue their outright denial and blatant persecution of their Macedonian minorities. One hundred years after the fateful partition of Macedonia in 1913, Bulgaria and Greece are still attempting to eradicate the Macedonian identity without fear of repercussions from the European Union. Greece, in particular, forcibly changed the names of all Macedonian people and toponyms into Greek in the 1920s, and any attempt to reclaim personal names by Macedonians continue to be suppressed by the Greek government.

      MHRMI and AMHRC demand that the EU force its member-states to live up to their human rights obligations under international law. Furthermore, as the use of dual-names in other EU countries has become commonplace, MHRMI and AMHRC call on the EU to promote the use of the original Macedonian names of villages and other toponyms in Bulgaria and Greece.

        if the minorities such as the macedonians can preserve & are recognized with the macedonian toponym names that would be great.

          Won't be long before we have groups calling for the placenames in RoMacedonia to be reinstated from their Albanian names back to their Macedonian names.

          All this from an unruly minority.

          Shame on the Macedonians!

            MHRMI and ARCAM Gala Banquet on June 1, 2013 in Toronto

            MHRMI and ARCAM Gala Banquet on June 1, 2013 in Toronto

            Commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the Plight of the Detsa Begaltsi and the 100th Anniversary of the Fateful Partition of Macedonia

            Macedonian Human Rights Movement International (MHRMI) and the Association of Refugee Children from Aegean Macedonia (ARCAM) are pleased to announce our Gala Banquet on June 1, 2013. We will be commemorating the 65th anniversary of the plight of the Detsa Begaltsi and the 100th anniversary of the fateful partition of Macedonia.

            Our special guests will include the Editor of Nova Zora and member of Vinozhito, Dimitri Jovanov, member of Vinozhito from Kukush, Tanas Trajanov, and TV Sonce journalist and MHRMI International Coordinator Slavko Mangovski.

            Macedonian Child Refugees (Detsa Begaltsi) were evacuated from Greece as children during the Greek Civil War of 1946-1949. To escape the bombing of Macedonian villages by the Greek army, children aged 2-14 were evacuated by the Red Cross and settled across Europe. Most of the evacuations occurred 65 years ago, in 1948. The Detsa Begaltsi have consistently been denied entry into Greece simply because they assert their Macedonian ethnic identity.

            After the Balkan Wars of 1912-13, the Treaty of Bucharest tragically partitioned Macedonia among Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria, while a small part was given to Albania in 1919. Upon annexation of Macedonia's territory, each country began terrorist campaigns aimed at killing, expelling or forcibly assimilating the indigenous Macedonian population.

            The Republic of Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, while Macedonians in Aegean Macedonia (annexed by Greece), Pirin Macedonia (annexed by Bulgaria) and Mala Prespa and Golo Brdo (annexed by Albania) are still being persecuted simply for being Macedonian.

            Macedonian Human Rights Movement International works relentlessly to help Macedonians overcome the human rights abuses that they face on a daily basis throughout all parts of Macedonia. MHRMI, and our partners the Australian Macedonian Human Rights Committee, are the only organizations in the Macedonian diaspora that finance and organize Macedonian human rights activities in the Balkans. Among our many initiatives are:
            • The purchase and financing of the only Macedonian radio station in Lerin and TV station in Korca, Albania;
            • The only Macedonian language classes throughout Aegean Macedonia and Albania, including the opening of another kindergarten in Korca;
            • The funding of Nova Zora, Narodna Volja and other Macedonian newspapers and publications in Aegean Macedonia, Pirin Macedonia and Mala Prespa/Golo Brdo;
            • The crucial Our Name is Macedonia campaign, which demands an immediate end to the "name negotiations";
            • The operation of human rights offices for Macedonians in Bulgaria, Greece and Albania;
            • Demanding recognition and support for Macedonia and Macedonian human rights in Washington, Ottawa, Brussels and throughout the world.

            The MHRMI and ARCAM Gala Banquet will take place on June 1, 2013 at St. Clement of Ohrid Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral and Banquet Centre, 76 Overlea Blvd in Toronto. Dinner will be at 7pm and admission is $50/adult, $20/student and children under 12 are free.

            For tickets or more information, please call 416-850-7125, email [email protected] or visit www.mhrmi.org, www.facebook.com/mhrmi, www.twitter.com/mhrmi.

Without their tremendous help, Nova Zora would not be able to carry on its struggle for equal rights for all Macedonians. MHRMI and AMHRC Call on Nimetz to Resign Post and to Denounce Name Negotiations

                    MHRMI and AMHRC Call on Nimetz to Resign Post and to Denounce Name Negotiations

                    Toronto, Canada and Melbourne, Australia (April 16, 2013) - As the first UN mediator for the name dispute, Robin O'Neil, has said, "Macedonia must not and will not change its name in order to appease Greece. If Macedonia succumbs to pressures and changes its name, such events will only give more firepower to Greece until it reaches its final goal - Macedonia to vanish from the map."

                    Macedonian Human Rights Movement International (MHRMI) and the Australian Macedonian Human Rights Committee (AMHRC) call on the current UN mediator, Matthew Nimetz, to publicly come to the same conclusion as his predecessor, resign his post and denounce the nonsensical name negotiations.

                    As MHRMI and AMHRC have stated in the Our Name is Macedonia campaign, which calls on Macedonia to immediately stop the name negotiations, "Would any other country negotiate its own name?"

                    Instead of entertaining ridiculous suggestions such as the recent "Upper Republic of Macedonia", apparently for the "privilege" of entering the European Union and NATO, Macedonia, and the international community, must put an end to the name negotiations. Despite claims to the contrary, any change to the bilateral name used between Macedonia and Greece would change Macedonia`s name internationally.

                    Macedonians worldwide are vehemently against the name negotiations and rightly so, as it is common sense to see that there is no "solution" when one country is being asked to change its name to appease another country's racist notion that it has no right to exist.

                      Would it be feasible to commence a campaign outling how the Greeks have managed to put Nimitz in a postion of absolute failure and the more he tries the bigger fool he will look, the longer this goes?
                      Surely a campaign to allow him a respectable exit would be far better than this farce he is forced to endure and bear the consequences of?
                      On Delchev's sarcophagus you can read the following inscription: "We swear the future generations to bury these sacred bones in the capital of Independent Macedonia. August 1923 Illinden"

                        It's the best gig going around, luxury hotels, wining and dining in the best restaurants, first class air travel, greek island vacations for him, his family, their friends and all of their pets.
                        There's probably a smorgasbord of the finest greek hookers that greek credit can buy, mountains of revisionist history collections given to him, his weight in olives and feta cheese at a whim, the odd classical period artifact thrown in over the years and anything else those lying, thieving bastards can lay their greasy hands and throw in his direction...

                          I would have thought he wouldn't want a failure registered against his diplomatic credentials, which would be the end of his diplomatic career(perhaps an enticement of a bigger and better task with moe rewards would suffice). Money and all the other trappings are certianly a big attraction, but people like him aspire to higher credentials (once the bank account is ample). It would take some strategizing but I'm sure we could come up with a more attractive result than being known for the longest running dispute in history, failing to resolve it and recording the longest running diplomatic failure in modern day history....not a good look on the resume! Mind you there are alternative methods, I thought we'd start with the sensible ones.

                            Mate, he's in his mid 70's he's not chasing another diplomatic post after this.
                            He's milking this baby for everything it's worth.

                            MAYBE he's saving the Macedonian's from themselves...perhaps he realises that the less palatable the suggestion the less chance the corrupt Macedonians will fall for it...that's about the best explanation that I can come up with...the last bloke seemed to have worked out the futility of the negotiations without too much trouble.

                              Bit of reverse psychology on the Maco's you reckon?
                              Still I would ahve thought he would prefer to end his career by leaving the stage with a bow...rather than rotten tomatoes following him!

                                Macedonian Human Rights Movement International Press Release
                                Macedonian Human Rights Movement International (MHRMI) is dedicated to pursuing all fundamental human and national rights including the right of freedom of expression and association and to support all democratic principles for all ethnic Macedonians living in Greece, Bulgaria and Albania.

                                April 17, 2013

                                The recent proposal by UN mediator, Matthew Nimetz, that Macedonia change its name to "Upper Republic of Macedonia" in order to appease Greece and be "considered" for entry into the European Union and NATO highlights the urgent need for this appeal. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, also called on Macedonia to change its name and claimed, "...there is no other alternative, there is no other way forward. And to act sooner is better than later. This is the only way towards progress on your European path."

                                There is another way forward. Macedonia must stop negotiating its own name and stop begging to get into the European Union and NATO.

                                The United States, the EU, and NATO fully support the racist and nonsensical name negotiations and are applying immense pressure on Macedonia to change its name.

                                Macedonian-Americans can make a difference. Contact your Member of Congress now to denounce the name negotiations and demand support for Macedonia!

                                How can the United States, which claims to spread democracy throughout the world, demand that a country surrender its most basic right - that of self-identification?

                                Macedonian-Americans must take this message to their elected representatives and, instead of asking for American support for entry into NATO and the EU, you must demand that the United States defend the values that it proclaims it stands for.

                                Macedonian Human Rights Movement International is leading the defence of Macedonia's name and human rights in North America and, with our partners the Australian Macedonian Human Rights Committee, throughout all parts of Macedonia and worldwide. Join us by contacting your Member of Congress today and demand that they denounce the name negotiations!
