    Anzac day 2012

    The soldiers who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula created a legend, adding the word ‘Anzac' to our vocabulary, and creating the notion of the Anzac spirit
    What does Anzac Day mean to you today?
    "Ido not want an uprising of people that would leave me at the first failure, I want revolution with citizens able to bear all the temptations to a prolonged struggle, what, because of the fierce political conditions, will be our guide or cattle to the slaughterhouse"

    I used to think it helped define the Australian spirit. I take some inspiration from it. But whenever I hear about a nation's spirit, I tend to accept it is really human spirit. But it also represents a bitter pill with Australians making the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their (incompetent) British colonial masters.

    I like Ataturk's quote at the time:
    I do not order you to fight, I order you to die. In the time which passes until we die, other troops and commanders can come forward and take our places.
    Notwithstanding this:

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
    Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.
