Here are collection of Old Macedonian Folk Songs. Many of these songs were around Before we were born. Some evan before our parents and evan Grand parents were Born. I wish to compile some clasics sung By Both the older Generation and some of our Younger generation. Everyone is welcome to post songs. But please try to keep to Narodni Pesmi and if you can, leave a brief message on its history, such as period or region it came from. Evan if it has a special meaning to you personaly, we would love to hear what it reminds you of, or why it is special to you.

I personaly get sick of Doom and gloom, so lets have a place where we can at times sit Back and reflect on our past. I have beutiful memories of my Grand Parents. The songs Dedo sang, the stories they told will live with me for ever. When i close my eyes and listen to certain songs, i see my Grand parents and Parents when they were young. Working on the fields living a uncomplicated simple life. Where mordern technology was not around. Where Brothers and sisters, uncles, aunties all lived together. All knew each other. Helped each other. The days where people respected each other.

Some of these songs were around when Macedonia was one Family aswell. Please enjoy. :macedonia

The Macedonian folk singer Aleksandar Sarievski (1922 - 2002) performing the old and famous Macedonian traditional folk song "Uči me majko, karaj me" (Teach me mother, scold me).

He was one of the most famous folk singers from the Republic of Macedonia.
His specialty used to be rendition of old Macedonian folk songs like Jovano,Jovanke, More Sokol Pie, Zajdi,Zajdi Jasno Sonce etc. He was also the first one to provide a recorded record of these songs.

Wanderer, these songs that you heard in Kostur you will most likely find in Bitola, Prilep, Ohrid, etc - did you hear the same in the Peloponnese, Athens, Islands, etc also?

There are several Macedonian songs that are sung with Greek words in those parts (Kostur, Lerin, etc) or played with no words at all. Of course, you ask the average Greek and these songs are 'pure' Greek, yet, sometimes I look at the Irish and I think about the dozens of patriotic Irish songs they have which they sing in the English language rather than Gaelic, and still you will find no englishman claiming these songs to be for the glory of angloism.

What is the difference?

YouTube - Armensko Oro - AEGEAN MACEDONIAN SONG. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBRMCFv4ujU)Thanks El Bre i realy enjoyed that. I will ask you a question that might be an obvious one. "Armensko" is that the name of a village i have heard of called "Armenoro" or does Armensko mean something else?

El Bre

Glad you liked it Billy. To answer your question, they are two different villages. Armensko is about 7 or 8 KMs west of Lerin, while I believe Armenoro is east of the City.

This song comes from the Macedonian village of BUF, in the Lerin (Florina) Region of Greek ocupied Macedonia. The Village of BUF was the center of Macedonian rebellion against the Turks, and against Greek ocupation.

A former Bufcanec that now lives in Bitola tells, 70% of the Bufcani lost there lives during the war. About 250 of them. Another story was told How the Bufcani made plans to atack the city Lerin which was ocupied by the Greek Facist army. Like many stories Before, the village had a spion who warned the Greek army of the impending attack. The Greek army settled at the foot of the Hills anticipating this attack. The village Buf is nestled up in the mountains. As the Bufcani reached the botom they were ambushed and not one was spared.

Another story was told, where aparently there is a mas Grave where these Bufcani are buried just a few kilometers out side Lerin city center. You will find an unmarked vacant land with houses on ither side of it. The locals are aware of this site and everyone is afraid of Building on it. There was talk of a monument being built there. If any one knows anything or can confirm this, Please do so.

Here is the Lerinsko selo Buf oro. Enjoy the music and original photos of the locals just prior to the war

Love this Oro! What's the name of the release and do you know where I can get a copy?Bufskoto Oro. you can download it from the net. Try something like limwire or try this link from our local Radio station in Bitola that has a larg list of narodni pesmi.

http://www.radiomk.com/Mp3_Download_Samo_Na_www.RadioMk.com_ooo_yes/

First Check if its leagal or not. I am not sure of the law but, But my understanding is "Narodni" means Peoples Music. In macedonian Narodna means it belongs to the people and no one owns it or can make claim to it.

Instruction for the site:

-click 7 Macedonian-Makedonski
-click Narodna
- scroll down the large list to find a song. click the speaker symbol to listen or click the computer symbol to download.

But again i am not encouraging any form of Ileagal pyracy. WARNING: Pyracy is a criminal offence which could lead to large fines or inprisonment. ;)

Wanderer, up until now you have shown yourself to be a reasonable fellow, so reasonable that I would think a thread called "Macedonian Folk Songs" being specifically for Macedonian songs would be more than obvious to you. We consider our own culture seriously here, maybe you don't in Greece, maybe culture is a joke for Greeks. Not for Macedonians.

Yet, you post some elementary clip of some Bulgars and their pathetic remake of a Macedonian song. Are you deliberately trying to be provocative by mocking Macedonians, or was my expectation of you to be logic and sensible too much?

If you want to produce a 'diamond', then reply to my previous questions in this thread after your initial post about how you have heard similar songs in the part of Macedonia that Greece usurped during the Balkan Wars of 1913-14.

Maybe I didnt understood correctly.I thought it was a Macedonian song and since it was no other thread -about such songs- i posted it here.I admit that my purpose was not to inform about good Macedonian song, but my purpose was on having some fun,cuz I thought you would find it funny too.Mea Culpa.
Oh and the songs,as I said,I heard them only in Kastoria at a festival.I ve never heard them before and actually they were without words ,so I cannot tell if it was Greek or Macedonian Festival.

Pardon my curiosity, but where did you come up with that link? I double-clicked the clip and the youtube page came up with mostly Bulgarian songs listed beside it, probably because Dacheva is a Bulgarian singer. Please take the time to read the comments at the bottom of the clip also and see what nice comments your fellow Greeks make towards the Macedonians.

As for the songs you heard in Kostur, you may hear the same in Lerin or Voden, but you won't hear anything like that in Athens or the Peloponnese. That is because these are Macedonian songs, and are related to the songs over the 'evil' northern border. Go figure.

Some comments on Macedonian folk music.

Not only distinctively and uniquely Macedonian, but also very ancient.

Serious musicologists ... deal almost exclusively with Macedonian folk music. That fact is not surprising in view of the interest aroused by Macedonian folk music among musicologists, owing to its originality and characteristic place in folk music of the Balkan region.

The indigenous folk music of Macedonia, a product of ... various influences of the ethnic groups which had inhabited the Balkans before the arrival of the Slavs - offers excellent opportunities for the scholarly investigation ... "

Ofc I can answer, why i shouldn't? :)

I checked the website of Macedonia immigrants association to give you a proper answer. It says that there were around 300.000 muslim people(All could speak Macedonian and Turkish) at Macedonia around 1948s and 200.000 of them migrated to Turkey between 1948...1967 because of the opposition of communist regime and oppression of Bulgars around that time. Also there was immigrants who came to Turkey between 1900...1950 but its difficult to determine their exact population.

Only one of the Macedonia immigrants association in the city of Izmir says they have 50.000+ registered members.

About me;
I really don't know for sure. My parents was from Petrich and they migrated here at 1924. I remember that my grandma could speak Macedonian and Turkish but this is not an indication of anything. They were probably Turkish or half Turkish&Macedonian since it wasn't that uncommon thing 90 years ago.

Also we don't regret something like this here since even the founder of our Republic, Ataturk is half Turkish&Macedonian. Also about %30 of Turkey`s population are Balkan immigrants like that.

So, having multi-cultural heritage is not something to hide here, we are even proud of it. Maybe this is a heritage of the Empire days to us, i dont know.

These people are probably the children of 1950s immigrants. They teach Macedonian to their kids and most of them can speak Macedonian.

About ~170.000 people came to Turkey at that time(4th big wave of immigration from Macedonia). Most of them living in Izmir now.

"Goranski pesni" are songs that the OVCHARI used to sing during the time that they used to mind the sheep. Well thats one explanation i got.
Another explanation i got was, "Goranski Pesni" are songs by the torbeshi. I am not sure which is corect mabe zrinski can help.

Anyway, this song would have to be one of the oldest and first i can remember listening to as a child. It is a beutiful song.

Bill77, The Gorani are considered as there own ethnic group which have been claimed by Serbs,Bulgarians,Albanians,Macedonians and Bosniaks.
There religion is Muslim, and they are inhabited in Macedonia,Albania and Kosovo.
There population is 65,000.
They inhabit two villages in Macedonia they are Jelovjane and Urvic and other villages in Kosovo and Albania.
There mother tongue language is called Nashinski which literally means our people.
To me they seem like a mixed people but there language sounds to me similar to Macedonian.

Here is the lyrics to a Gorani song.

Verno libe

Gledaj me gledaj libe, abe verno libe,

gledaniku arena knjiga
Ja da ga pujem abe
gledaniku i da ga elam

I hope i helped you out with this. :001_smile:

Linguistically their language is considered Macedonian by most scholars (except for the extreme Bulgarian ones), however most of the people see themselves as Goranci above anything else.

Whilst I am posting on this thread, this is a personal favorite of mine, but in an instrumental version.

Its hard to explain why I like Macedonian music this much...why do people like rock, synth....Its hard to explain. I like the language, the rythms, the voices (esp Ilieva, Kostadinova, Sarievski), the softness of the songs, the "harshness" of the voices sometimes...how can I explain SoM? My parents bought cassettes with "Pjesme I plesovi Naroda Jugoslavije", as they were usually called, and I liked all the different musical styles but for some reason or the other the Macedonian tunes got stuck the most.
I dont like the Macedonian news broadcasts because I think they do not realise that they have mics to talk into..often it sounds like they almost scream or talk in a very forced way.
I understand most of the lyrics of the songs but not the news because they talk to fast. and..the dialects I find hardest to understand are those from the southern part of Macedonia...i.e.Voden,Solun etc

U could get most of the songs Daskalot. I can send CD:s with mp3 files if you want me to :)

The softness:
YouTube - Đorđi Belđigerovski/Ljiljana Spasevska - Od kaj što sonce... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_fCOy9GVcE)

And the "harshness" (harsh is probably not the right word but I cant find a better)

The general consensus is that Gorani linguistically speak a Macedonian language. The Bulgarians of course took this to mean Bulgarian... the dogs.

I know this song but with Turkish lyrics. The song`s name is "Manastir, dogum yerim" in Turkey, means "Manastir(bitola), my birthplace". Is "Bitola Moj Roden Kraj" has same meaning?

There was a very popular tv series few years ago. It was about the life of villager people shortly before Balkan wars and all episodes was filmed in Macedonia. This song was in it`s soundtrack and it became popular again here.

Btw, this song`s composer was living in Izmir and he died 1-2 years ago. I think he immigrated to Izmir at 1960s, during mass migrations from Macedonia.

Found this song, It's very similar to a story told to me as a child, might have also been in one of the Macedonian citanki. It's about a boy who is taken as a janissary after his village is destroyed. Many years later he marries his biological sister who was also taken without each other knowing who they truly are. When their son is born the Janissary hires an old lady (porobena) to help look after him. They overhear her singing to the boy that he is the son of a brother and sister who do not know each other but she knows them she was from the same village they were taken from. The story seems to be a slight variation of this song.

ALEKSANDRE TURUNDZEV OD (EKSHI SU)

This song is amazing. I stood at the corner (In Bitola) where he was hung. I seen a actual photo of him being hung. I had all sorts of emotions at that time. Unfortunately i did not visit his grave which aparently has the rope that he was hung with on display.

Apart from the emotional aspect of this song, i love how the lyrics to this song tells a brief story of this legend.

Crno mu bilo pishano
na Aleksandre Turundzhev,
shesnajst godishen vojvoda,
na sedumnajsta go fanaja.

"ozdola ide bahtijar pasa

so 300 momcinja...
Bahtijar pasa vikase ujdur kardaslar
Cakalarov vikase Ura momcinja"

Shareni chorapi, was the first Macedonian traditional dance I danced when I was in the Macedonian dance group as a little girl :) and i dont find his anaology odd at all, I find it heart warming and apt. Love for our grandparents, our heritage and preservation of our beautiful culture, and love for all of our Macedonian brothers and sisters under the FALSE borders. United.
Risto, I felt the same, I only have faded memories of my beloved grandparents in Macedonia, as a small child with them. And melancholy and sad I will be visiting their graves, my beautiful gentle maternal grandmother, I will fuflfill my promise that I shall go back again to see her, albeit her grave:(

Shareni chorapi is often played at Macedonian dances and functions in Adelaide, I find it odd that no one else identifies with it.

Hey Everyone.
There's a Macedonian song that my family once recorded off cassette around maybe 7-8 or so years ago and despite having the song on itunes, I cannot find it anywhere on the internet.

I decided to upload it to YouTube. Perhaps someone here is familiar with the correct title of the song?

YouTube - Zemja Makedonska (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pGzCkFvsf4&feature=player_embedded)

In my opinion, the lyrics are quite sad and very inspiring, definitely a classic folk song.

The Greeks also use this particular tune (with different lyrics of course) as a kind of unofficial anthem for all the grkomani in Northern Greece (what they call Greek Macedonia). I don't know the origins of either the Macedonian or Greek version, except for knowing for a fact that one is the truth, while the other is your typical modern greek lies.

Any help would be appreciated.
